Aug. 12, 2006 Mayrics, España Reviewed by: Brian
It's been a while since the last time I've been to Mayrics. Apparently, the place had some sort of a facelift. Nothing major though. For better or worse, Mayrics still did look and feel like Mayrics. The show didnt start until about eleven. That means people who arrived early (we were there at 10 and started drinking immediately) had enough time to settle in and get soaked with alcohol.
This was my first time to see hardcore crew Red Boy. They really stood out as the odd one on the bill which had predominantly Goth, black, and traditional metal bands. I'm sure I wasnt the only one impressed with the band's tight execution and driving beat-down rhythms. They certainly got ye olde foot a-tappin' and me head a-noddin'! But, they should really avoid playing with their backs to the audience.
Next band was Tenebrion. Thankfully, they still remain one of the angriest and most rabid sounding black metal bands this part of the Philippines. No keyboards, no synth / Goth influence. Just full on blasting ugliness accented with cold doom segments. Lets cross our fingers (inverted ofcourse) and hope they capture all that hate on record.
A short break then ensued. Just enough time to engage in drunken discussions with my buddies, enjoy some grub or take a load off at the piss room.
Third band up was Sacreligion. I'm not sure, but I think I've seen 'em perform before (all those years of alcohol abuse fries up brain cells real bad he, he...) But what I'm sure to remember was how good they were that night in Mayrics. Their brand of melodic technical death really caught me off-guard. Those twisting riffs and structures went down really good with my 6th or 7th bottle of Red Horse.
Unfortunately, Sacreligion was the last band we would see performing that night. We waited and waited. Almost half an hour had passed. But, there still wasn't a band on stage. Too bad some of the bands / band members didnt show up considering how good the first three performances went. We saw people leave and it was becoming apparent that the show was over (I saw members of Sea Of Rains but Im not sure if they ever got to play). It was probably just around 1:30AM and we werent about to spend the rest of the evening staring at each others faces. So my friends and I decided to go to a strip bar instead.
The strip bar was real cool. It had a great atmosphere and just the right size to afford the right view. We arrived during the floor show. And what a show it was! One after another, young ladies gyrated to the music. Two songs per lady and no breaks in between. And there's definitely no arguing with the traditional 1-On, 1-Off routine (1 song with clothes on, and then another song... Ah, you know what I mean) Now dont get me wrong, I have total respect for these women and I'm glad that they realize how beautiful they are and that they're willing to show it to us. We totally appreciate it. He, he... Hell, they probably make more money in a week than some of us do in a month! Cheers!
