BY TOM LOUNGES Times Correspondent | Friday, January 23, 2009 Veteran region rock clubbers likely will recall the name of Mammoth, a hugely popular group that rocked area stages in the 1970s and 1980s, after releasing a pair of minor local hits ("Sweet Jeannie" and "Suzie") for Kiderian Records.
The region-based Mammoth became a permanent footnote in rock history as the band that in the mid-'70s legally forced a Los Angeles group also named "Mammoth" to change its name -- now known as Van Halen.
Two of the founding Chicago Mammoth members are back making music together -- drummer Steve Crabtree and guitarist/bassist Garry Flanagin -- and have recorded and released a new single, "Give Me Your Love."
Making this single even cooler is that Kevin J. Friend, Mammoth's former lead singer and "golden boy," wrote the lyrics, with the music composed and arranged by Flanagin and keyboardist Tom Swiering (a latter-day Mammoth member).
Providing vocals is Mike Kalmas (ex-How Happy), with tasty saxophone supplied by Carl Larson. FYI: myspace.com/chicagomammoth.
