On 14th July 2006, we launched the most important campaign in a generation - to fight for the leadership of the Labour party and to reclaim it as the party of working people.

Since 1997, New Labour has alienated teachers, health workers, students, pensioners, public service workers, trade unionists and people committed to the environment, civil liberties and peace. Spin and allegations of sleaze have only added to people's loss of trust in our party. Little wonder that 200,000 members have left and millions of voters have abandoned our party at the polls.

This campaign is demanding a democratic election for the leadership of our party and an open debate about the policies that a Labour Government should implement. Coronations are alien to the democratic traditions of our movement. A change in leadership must also mean a change to the deeply unpopular policies that are fatally undermining Labour's support and preparing the way for the Tories to return to power. That is why John McDonnell will be travelling the length and breadth of the country over the next year to win support for this historic campaign.

Millions of people across the country oppose privatisation and war. They no longer have a political voice. This campaign is a direct challenge to the current political consensus. Over the next few months, we will be encouraging one of the most open and democratic debates about the future direction of the country that our movement has ever seen. We will putting forward a detailed policy agenda and challenging the assumption that there is no alternative to Tory policies.

Above all, we are asking for you to get involved. We are calling on all those on the Left to join the Labour Party in order to join our campaign for a Real Labour Government. Together, we can prove that another world is possible.
