it is this simple
my mom started me off in music by enrolling me in suzuki piano
because i was 3 i only barely remember it being at the musical arts center on the second floor in their larger studio (haven’t been up there in over 25 years)

that knowledge of technique is important
that scalar theory and chord theory is relevant
that jimi hendrix is not the end all be all of guitar
that shredders would know more theory because of the prevelance of diatonic instead of pentatonic concentration
LUCKY
trust the ear
if it feels good it is
that bass players should play like it, not like guitar players
that it is possible to lock with the drummer while playing bass, and not only possible but crucial
that over playing is not neccesary
that in the moment in the vibe you can play someone upside down strung left handed bass right handed or vice versa
that transposition is a skill that is crucial as an instrumentalist
that practice is fun and crucial
that it is far better to play with honor than DISHONOR!
JOSIAH
that 4/4 is not the end all be all
that it is possible to mentally transcribe songs note for note
that i could play drums but that i might be best to sub contract
that practice could be crucial when divided between classic theory and new exploration
that it is fun to play/practice as a band 3-4 hours a day 3-4 days a week-the amount of synergy developed is priceless
that musical communication is personally a far more viable meaning for me than talking or blogging- that a person may present whatever front while talking but that they will be exposed for exactly what they are when playing-meaning someone may b.s. you talking for years, but it will only last minutes playing
that when there are only 2 of you, you do not have to fill in all of the gaps
that when someone will rehearse with you they are supporting you far more than almost anything else that can be done
pulse trumps metronomic time pulse is not absolute, metronomic time is
MOM
you should follow the soloist precisely, intuitively, and with great dedication
that the soloist is the most important thing, greater than time
that if you love your art and craft, you understand that there is one most important person out front at all times and it is not neccesarily about you
