Bill Maher insults Pope
Comments by HBO's Bill Maher insulting the Pope and calling Catholicism a "cult" that promotes "organized pedophilia" have stirred resentment among many American Catholics upset he would say this the week before Pope Benedict XVI visits the United States.
The comments were made on HBO's "Real Time with Bill Maher" on Friday, Apr. 11. Maher went into a long monologue on his program comparing the Catholic church to a polygamous cult -- the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints -- which was raided on Apr. 3 and whose founder, Warren Jeffs, was convicted last year for being an accessory to the rape of a teenage girl.
Bill Maher compared the Texas scandal and its latest alleged abuse with the sexual abuse scandal that rocked the Catholic Church in the United States in 2002.
"I'd like to tip off law enforcement to an even larger child-abusing religious cult," Maher told his audience. "Its leader also has a compound, and this guy not only operates outside the bounds of the law, but he used to be a Nazi and he wears funny hats. That's right, the Pope is coming to America this week and, ladies, he's single."
Catholic League President Bill Donohue responded that Maher "lied when he said the Pope 'used to be a Nazi.' Like all young men in Germany at the time, he was conscripted into a German Youth organization (from which he fled as soon as he could). Every responsible Jewish leader has acknowledged this reality and has never sought to brand the Pope a Nazi. That job falls to Maher."
Maher, a political liberal, has often been a magnet for controversy, making audacious statements targeting religion in general and ridiculing Christians especially. His mother was Jewish but he says that he "was raised Catholic."
On May 24, 2002, Maher told CNN's Larry King Live: "I never even knew I was half-Jewish until I was a teen-ager. I was just so frightened about the Catholics and everything that was going on there in the church -- and I was never, you know, molested or anything. And I'm a little insulted. I guess they never found me attractive. And that's really their loss."

EGN: Now, I tell you...is this sad or what? Is this guy hurting for ratings to stoop down and insult His Holiness like that in order to get attention! It seems that if you do not understand anything that you know nothing of, you make fun of it and better yet, you insult it.
I will be the first to admit that I'm Catholic, (all of you probably had seen it posted in Google, Wikipedia, etc.) and a proud one at that! And I'm aware that the Catholic Church has been under extremely heavy scrutiny about the sexual abuse scandal that they said is "rocking".
The Devil is like 7-11...he works 24-7... and always finds way to tempt those who are priests and others who are trying to do "God's will", there are those who resist, and those who are weak ... 'fall from Grace'.
To those who are guilty of these hideous crimes, we can only pray for them.
Men who have had the "calling" to become preists for the Catholic Church and do "God's will" have given up a lot in order to the vocation are the No.1 targets of the "Evil One". These preists are tempted everyday of their lives, even more than their "former lives". I know several young men who had given up their "former lives" and had the "calling" to go to the siminaries to become young priests and spreading the Word of God in different countries.
And how do I know this? Well, I 'catechized' them... these young men used to be street thugs and others I knew them from their parents. I would sit them down and talk to them about how Christ died for them and how it would effected their lives and the next thing I know, some of them were heading to Boston and Newark to do their vocation.
So, this "hack comedian" who couldn't get work in movies and decided to become a talk show host named Bill Maher knows nothing of this. The comments he made just showed us on how pea-brained (if not, smaller) he really is.
I had the chance to visit His Holiness' home in Vatican City in Rome about a year and a half ago. I was amongst thousands of my fellow Catholics when Pope Benedict XVI was riding around the St. Peter's Square waving at the people, I was within "fingertips" from touching His Holiness' hand as he was reaching out towards me to try to touch mine. We made "eye contact" and I saw the "warmth of the Holy Spirit" within his eyes as he looked into mine. One would have to be there and witness to truly understand and absorb all of it. I tell you, not a thought of conceit was in his mind at all. Knowing that he could not touch my hand, he simply gave me a blessing which made the whole trip to Italy worthy.
So, I'm sending some flowers to Bill Maher by using FTP (Fuck That Puto!).
I'll be in "confessions" this weekend.
