Buenos Aires Clubhouse

Monday 26th May

It's been a week of  mixed emotions…We've said goodbye to our lovely Mia (sniff) but while Argentina's back at work, we've enjoyed a extra long weekend in honour of the British and North American bank holiday…wohoo!

Anyone who's been here in Argentina over the last week will have noticed blue and white flags popping up on houses, sticking out of taxi doors and pinned on jackets all in preparation for yesterday's celebrations of the 25th May.  For anyone who's not quite clear what the deal was, 25th may 1810 was the day that the first Argentine government was sworn in and ribbons of the nation's colours, were first worn in the Plaza de Mayo. It was the first move in a struggle towards independence, which was finally declared on the 9th July, sixteen years later. So now you know!

So what's happening this week…?

PRIVILEGED INFORMATION

This is one for all you Brits who are getting fed up of everyone telling you how bad our food is. Grab a fellow islander, or someone else who needs to be proven wrong and head down to Rocket bar and bistro in Congreso for some good old British grub. Ok, so you won't get a juicy sirloin steak for under a fiver, but you will get a hearty serving of roast beef, Yorkshire pudd and gravy, or just a decent sandwich (not so easily found 'round these parts). Its pretty cheap and you can eat in or take-away. Its on Radavia 1285,  Subte line A, stop Saenz Peña.

Café classes…wanna learn Spanish the Argentinian way? Español andando offers classes with a difference. Learn Spanish as you stroll around the city, dipping in and out of cafes on your way round and dunking medialunas as you learn. It's a fun four day crash course in the city and its language which is 100% focused on communicative and functional Spanish. Not your average classroom. Contact (011) 5278 9886 or check out the website for more info www.español-andando.com.ar

FOOD FINDS

Welcome to our new section!! Written by foodie Layne Mosler, this small weekly segment will introduce you to some of the undiscovered culinary wonders of BA! For more taxista-inspired food finds from SAE food columnist Layne Mosler, visit www.foodquests.blogspot.com

As the first country to recognize Armenia as an independent nation, Argentina welcomed thousands of Armenians fleeing persecution in the early 20th century. Determined to keep their cuisine alive, these refugees opened delis, restaurants and grocery stores in what is now known as the barrio armenio in Palermo Viejo. Today, the range of culinary treasures you can find here is startling - take a tour and sample the big flavors of "Little Armenia" for yourself!

Start your journey at the Confitería del Medio Oriente (Cabrera/Malabia), a bakery/general store that transforms into a madhouse on Friday and Saturday at lunch when they serve some of the best shawerma in BA. You can also find spices like sumac and cardamom here, along with excellent baklava.

After your shawerma, stop by the Panadería Armenia (Scalabrini Ortiz 1317, 4831-4571) for a cheese and onion empanada arabe, more fantastic baklava, and other traditional Armenian sweets.

Pick up take-home treats at Confitería Damasco (Scalabrini Ortiz 1283, 4773-2146), where the spice selection is deep and wide and the shelves are stuffed with orange blossom and rose waters, ouzo, candied orange peel and Turkish delight. Skip the hummus and go for Damasco's homemade Greek yogurt or their ensalada belen (with roasted eggplant, red peppers, cashews, and raisins).
