He stands alone among the throng
His voice a choir of one
And, oh, he knows what you have done

The shoe-thrower has spoken
And he has thrown
I wish the shoes had been my own

The hurler then was beat and broken
But his message twirled
In words and pictures 'round the world

A symbol now, imprisoned still
The hero's shoes a gun
The hero's shoes too big to fill
And all, oh, know what you have done

I felt immense joy when I saw that moment on the TV.....In English history there's an Anglo-Saxon king called Alfred who is known for 'burning the cakes' by schoolchildren everywhere. I recently found out where that story came from. Alfred was so embattled by the Viking invasions that he sought refuge in the countryside, and was taken in by a peasant woman who instructed him to watch her cakes. He allowed them to be burned, and was told off by the woman - and this story was used to illustrate how far Alfred had fallen from being the king of England. Seeing Bush being the target of the shoe-thrower made me feel exactly the same; an appropriately humiliating end to his tenure.....Thank you Margo; I love the resonance of your words in capturing this moment.
