Spent the majority of today writing, and one of the things my character was focused on was a toy from childhood and that special toy, small and worthless as it is, is invaluable to her. It's a key to so much...

It made me think about that one thing, the one special thing, that I have from a time almost before I have memory.

It's a pair of boats, simple boats, made of wood. One's painted green, the other a mustard yellow.

Both were made by my Dad, one for me, one for my brother. The paint on the bottoms of both is mostly worn off, but not the our names written in indelible ink.

It was only about a year and a half ago that my brother and I looked at them very closely and discovered that if you look carefully under the paint on the smokestacks, you can see, stamped and stenciled in tiny letters, that my father named those boats after our Mom.

What's your special toy? What's that one thing that you have that's the key to that special place, days of endless summer or never-ending dreams?

What a lovely memory and find. I think that the fact that your father made them makes them that much more special.

What do I have in the attic...well it''s not actually in the attic, but it's a very old copy of Anne of Green Gables. I have it on a book shelf in the extra bedroom. In the attic I have copies of Nancy Drew and Trixie Belden both stories that I loved to read as a young girl.

Thank you for bringing up this topic of special toys and childhood memories. I'll admit that it took me a while to really figure out what my special toy was. I wasn't sure I had any. But then I remembered that, when I was about 3, I used to love a small, white plush dog. I named it "Manchitas" ("little spots" in Spanish), despite the fact that it only had one dark spot on its back. I used to play with it with my Mamá Martha but would get irritated when she'd refer to it as "Chispitas" (or "little sparks"). And so of course, being the know-it-all child that I was, I had to correct her time and time again. I have a feeling, though, that she knew very well what the dog's name was and only pretended not to know to antagonize me. In either case, it turned into a sort of game between us.

Unfortunately, I don't know what happened to it. Things get misplaced throughout the years, especially when one moves a lot. But it's a simple yet fond memory of my late grandmother, my second mother. I treasure it deeply and hope to be reunited with Chispitas one day.

Moms are funny like that - mine used to "miss" the boo boo on purpose (I love how Manchitas became Chispitas :-D). Maybe one day, you will be reunited. My "soft" doll was Pachurita (which I suppose translates closest in English to Snuggles).

mine is my Grandad's 1938 Schaefer fountain pen...he used to let me use it at his drawing board.  Thousands of hours were spent with that pen.  It's had new innards twice and I still use it.  Like the boats, it's full of memories

I think it's awesome you still use that pen! My boats sit on my shelf, more decorative than useful as bookends, but still, I love them :-)
