Dear Friends,

Although I cannot boast a lifetime of keeping my views to myself, I have seldom taken on the responsibility of trying to change someone (alright, maybe a few girlfriends, but you'll never hold me to that). However, this year for me has been one of aggressively shifting from a reluctant pursuit of change and growth to taking a proactive stance on what I believe in times that I see as clearly representative of a societal paradigm shift both necessary and urgent for our country and world.

I received a lot of questions from some about why I would allow my song 'List of Demands' to be used in a Nike campaign. Ironically, half of the people now reading this post never heard of me until that commercial aired. That, indeed, was one of my reasons for allowing it. A small circle of poets and conscious do-gooders are not enough to effect the change necessary to shift our planet in peril. We must enlist people from all walks of life, people not accustomed to questioning the norm, people who may simply want to dance uninterrupted without message or slogan. I see no glory in 'preaching to the converted'. Furthermore, I believe fully in the power of music and have branded my work with it's own conscientious stamp and stomp of attitude fueled to steal the show in the face of the nonsensical. Quite simply, it was clear to me that people would not be rushing to the store to buy Nikes after seeing that commercial, but rather rushing to youtube or itunes to hear or download the song. I even imagined those who would be rushing to blogs to question how I could allow this to happen and the subsequent discussion of the ethical treatment of factory workers and how new minds would be informed and enlisted in the struggle for ethical change.

As an artist that characterizes himself and his work as a hybrid synthesis of creativity and responsibility I am forced to make politicized choices, weigh evils, and work strategically to make a living and contribute to the change I wish to see in my lifetime. For instance, the groundbreaking digital release of The Inevitable Rise and Liberation of NiggyTardust! wasn't done simply because I wanted to give my album away for free and maintain my independence as an artist, but also because record companies left me little choice. As a musician I have been signed to both Columbia/Sony and Island/Def Jam rosters and have faced consistent naysayers who have basically insisted that I choose the type of music I am going to make and if the choice wasn't according to their definition of hip hop showed little faith in it or in the possibility of a wide public supporting it, without realizing their role in determining what the public supports. Radio stations followed suit in determining my music not urban, alternative, or rock enough. Of course my music showed more rock influence than Eminem but the KROQ's of the world seemed to be basing their definition of rock on something a little more surface than sound, at the time. Thus, I have always found myself with fans that have through their own hard work and diligence fought through the norm to find me, yet still voice surprise that more people haven't.

The compliment "you're ahead of your time", often feels more like a curse than a gift from a well-wisher. I have never considered myself ahead of my time simply because a few executives may not have been visionary enough to determine where music or antiquated ideas of race are heading or to realize their role in continually underestimating the intelligence of the listener and our generation. Rather I have seen those 'powers that be' as behind the times and perpetuators of an old cycle. Likewise, I have seen their over-turn as inevitable. Thus, The Inevitable Rise and Liberation of NiggyTardust! simply came at a point when I realized that we were, indeed, living at a crossroads and Victor Hugo's saying, "There's nothing more powerful than an idea whose time has come", came to life.

Without question, we are living in powerful times, a time where the powers of being will truly prevail over the powers that be. This is evident in the political sector where it has become clear, at least to me, that my support of Barack Obama is not because he's black, but because he seems to represent both symbolically and ideologically many of those ideas and ideals whose time has come. Ideas of the divine need for change ("God's just a baby and her diaper is wet." Get it?) in how we look at the world, ourselves, and at our individual and communal powers. The idea that might is right, that we demonstrate our power with aggressive force is great for football teams, but hardly the best idea for a country whose running source of pride has historically been the evidence of our collective imagination: our music; our films; our amusement parks; and the technology we create to share it. These products of peace are the things that made the world initially fall in love with us. We have rooted ourselves in a growing sense of independence as evidenced through our historic social movements, always upgrading our beliefs and laws to reflect our broadening understanding and vision. Of course, many, if not most, would label this a very optimistic perspective of the ongoing struggle for justice and equal opportunity for all people in this land. There is still a fight to have our voices heard and many of us when given the opportunity to speak seem to have very little to say. Then are those who have consistently fought against growth and change, who would rather fight for their right to maintain their antiquated, sometimes ignorant points of view, as if the age of the perspectives themselves is what validates them. Yet, the first technology is of the mind. It is the shift in perspective that allows us to streamline possibilities of understanding as reflected through invention. And quite simply, we are coming of age.

In this age it is our responsibility to challenge ourselves beyond cultural traditions and delineate between what we have perpetuated through ignorance rather than wisdom. We face an opportunity to broaden our worldview through the exchange of technology and information. We need not rely on what teachings of the past could not anticipate. It is an opportunity to forge ahead and beyond the wavering shortsightedness of our religious leaders, elected officials, teachers, principals, and sometimes parents and live in simple accordance with what we can feel deep within ourselves. We should no longer be surprised to sometimes find ourselves seemingly more intelligent, informed, or insightful than our leaders and bosses, rather we should feel encouraged to inspire and share our most informed selves in our every encounter. And that, my friends, is what has led me to write you today.

While sitting on a plane, on my way back from Lollapalooza, reading Thanking The Monkey by Karen Dawn, it struck me that this was the second awesomely inspiring and informative book I was reading this summer without sharing my thanks by spreading the word. I am sometimes hesitant about making a big deal about my vegan diet, as I have considered it a personal choice worth little discussion. Yet more and more, I have found myself attempting to encourage people who ask me where I find my inspiration, or what issues do I find important, or how can we curb warfare and violence to consider what we ingest. A story was recently recounted to me of a popular TV chef who chose to raise little piglets on his show to insure that they were fed organic food and not injected with chemicals (as is the practice on most factory farms), all for the sake of fattening them up for their slaughter and another primetime recipe. Yet, the time that this chef spent with these pigs taught him a valuable lesson (more valuable for the pigs, no doubt). What he learned was how intelligent pigs are. In fact, in recent times, it is common knowledge for most that pigs are arguably more intelligent than "mans best friend" and companion, the dog. For our chef, this meant switching gears and realizing that he could not consciously kill this intelligent animal, that it would constitute a murder as brutal as slicing your fluffy pets neck and watching it writhe and bleed to death, or sticking an electric prod up its ass and electrocuting it, if the fur or skin is of value…

It may seem like I have just taken a turn to the graphically extreme, I wouldn't want to make you "lose your lunch", but these are the common practices perpetuated by the factory farm industry on millions of animals a day, in the name of your breakfast lunch and dinner. And, no, I'm not simply talking about pigs, but also cows, chickens, turkey, horses (that's right horses. Everyday), and fish. Everyday, our species participates in the mass genocide of other species without care or concern or even questioning whether the violence that we ingest and condone plays any role in our apathetic support of the war machine we have become. How is it that we as human beings can represent both the highest and most developed and lowest and least concerned forms of intelligence of any living species? Are we simply glued to age-old barbaric traditions that cloud our senses and render us inhumane in our dependence on comfort foods and practices? Is our dependence on foreign oil the only thing we need to curb? What about not so foreign species?

Some might argue that artists are a race or species apart from the common person. Yet we all identify with the teachings of Gandhi, the genius of Einstein, the art of Leonardo Da Vinci, Picasso, Rembrandt and the talent and compassion of living artists like Alice Walker, Will Smith, The Mars Volta, Dead Prez, Prince and countless others. Some of us choose to emulate their styles, their fashion, their career choices, but why not their diets? If our brightest most celebrated stars all have this one thing in common why are we so slow in connecting the dots for ourselves? Perhaps the biggest issue at hand is not what our cars run on, but essentially what do we run on? The fact is that factory farms are the number one users of crude oil, not cars. That's basically what it takes to kill approximately one million chickens per hour (just in the US). More than half of our water supply goes to feed animals being fattened for slaughter. The methane gases that contribute to global warming are produced majorly by cow farts in factory farms, not to mention the amount of fossil fuels needed to create just one pound of beef.

Yep. You doing the math? Basically if we shifted our compassion towards animals, the domino effect would heal the planet. We'd no longer be cutting down rain forests to create more space for cows to graze, we'd stop depleting the ocean of the necessary (keyword: necessary) food chains that our eco system depends on, diseases including many cancers, heart disease, obesity, and others which find their root in the food/toxins we ingest would slowly disappear as would our taste for violence.

Which brings me to the other book I read this summer that inspired me to reevaluate every aspect of what I've been taught through the news and media, especially concerning the war in Iraq and Afghanistan. That book is The Shock Doctrine by Naomi Klein.

So what are you reading?

I know what you should be listening to,

Niggy.

DMT the Spirit Molecule by Dr. Rick Strassman! It's the first time in decades a doctor was given permission to research the effects of a hallucinogen on human subjects since the 60's (thanks to dickheads like Timothy Leary). It studies the effects of DMT or Dimethyltriptomine in the human brain. Its the worlds most powerfull hallucinogen and is naturally occurring in almost every organic substance on the planet. Our brains produce it from the Pineal gland and his study is to find out why our bodies would NEED to produce it and its effects on the psyche. When you are born you are flooded with DMT and when you die the same... Dreams states show elevated levels of DMT. Brilliant study and shocking results. Since reading it I have spoken through E-mail several times to Mr Strassman about his results. I would HIGHLY suggest this book for anyone who is spiritual and believes in something bigger than "this"!!! Clinical study who's results support the spirituality of life.
Much Love Saul

Yo Niggy, good post!! A bit too long to be honest (IMHO) , but thanks for sharing this. It's good to see a change in the minds of people in the US now, I mean the US was always so ignorant of all this. New York needs more energy than Africa and other facts... here in Germany we might be a track or two ahead but this is not a race. Its not a chace, its just what it is. A state of people minds and their attention, their fears and their perception of the world. But I'm also afraid that a save those save earth campaign could also be used to turn attention away from real problems. But what are the real problems? What is the truth anyway? A few decades ago the news told us we might get another ice age, now they say the planets heats up to eave nothing but dust real soon if we dont start pay more and more for that old fashioned and bad bad bad oil and whatever. I dont buy it. I dont buy no news anymore. Its not that I dont care but I just believe in what I really know and act upon that. That s all I can do, Im not a superhero anyway but I can do my part right here where I am in my front porch. Take out the trash in my own head first and thats a tough job, man. Lately I have a hard time learning about myself but I'm so thankful that I found a mentor in a person I love and adore and who just feels the same for me. The real challenge in life I believe is not saving the planet or whatever. its not about who is right or wrong. Its about love and fear and the question about life and death and all of that, you know what I mean. Its about trust and believe. About seeing the good in everything. Its all in our perception. Dont fear nothing and finally youll get free. So what do and did I read lately? check this out: NOW: "Veronica decides to die" by Paulo Coelho BEFORE: "THE ALCHEMIST" and "BRIDA" also by Paulo Coelho This doesnt mean that Coelho is the great teacher for all yall, he's not the mentor I mentioned but from my experience with life his books now came to me at the right time I guess. Maybe it hits someone else at the right time now too. ever onward yall -m.

Regarding the campaign cajones:
Sometimes you have to get a bit tactically guerilla to get the heart behind the words out. Anyone who is kicking up drama over you allowing a track to be used...is kicking up interest in you with someone a few heartbeats down the road that may have never listened to your music if they hadnt heard that person carping about it. It's really cool that you opted TO speak about the whole thing. Part of why things are a mess is the speaking out sucks so much that most don't...and the system rolls on the way it always has. Picture those behind the wheel of the steamroller looking around like lemurs in confusion after their leader has been killed... Every time you Do choose to speak up.

Congrats, and all the best.

Regarding summer reading:
I read Fasting by by Jentezen Franklin about a few weeks ago,and got caught up in the little the book had about the prophet Daniel's story in regards to fasting. He's the one who, when he got to Babylon as an exile, actually went on a vegetarian fast to pretty much maintain his sanity moving through a culture that didnt have his best interests in mind.

Right now, I am struggling with Reimagining Evangelism:inviting friends on a spiritual journey by Rick Richardson.

the truth lies in the stars-sol, we are everything, old souls living on soil from forgotten land in a city of ruins where only the damned have the strength to stand, perhaps its too late to be what we think we need but i know that if enough people stand up all at once we could truly shake the world...ONE LOVE (this includes butterflies and trees)

Life’s Strange Design

The incoherent ramblings
of starving artists struggling,
seeking the greatest sign

Soon there will be
no one left to decide
what is right, step in line

A woman becomes a
planetary being larger
than life’s strange design

Purchasing black clouds
as we perch and sing
unto the night, we bring

We could see a lot by sailing
through a sea of silent suffering,
open your eyes to whats happening

Saul, I guess I'm not doin' too bad, I bought myself that book with my college grad gift card, but I started reading Fences and Windows first (also Naomi Klein). Going to take a crack at The Shock Doctrine next, after I get through The Great Shark Hunt by Hunter S. Thompson.

Have you ever read The Air- Conditioned Nightmare by Henry Miller? Not modern but startlingly current in its observations of our society and so interesting that he made those observations back in 1931. I find that the Depression -era folks are a lot more inclined to be distrustful of government and media, and surprisingly well-acquainted with what has become a radical notion- that of thinking for yourself.

The power of your words brings tears to my eyes, every time. Thank you for speaking, for shouting, for sharing your gift of words- they can break down walls you know. Congratulations on pushing it to a new level - I thought I heard you on the telly! but I was like.... nahhhhh!
Yes. The world is ready and in need.

When walking through a grocery store (here in the midwest [beef belt]) I am often confronted by this feeling that my "personal choice" to be a vegan isn't just a personal matter of taste, but more likely, that I'm one of many compassionate vegans who are outcast by what the masses see as normal... Not in the same way that women or minorities or handicapped have been disrespected, discriminated against, ignored and even killed....NO... But then I realize that I'm not feeling society's brush off, as much as I'm feeling FOR the REAL VICTIMS whom I stand WITH... THE ANIMALS WHO ARE BEING TORTURED, THIER BASIC RIGHTS AS VESSELS OF LIFE BEING REVOKED, THEY ARE THE ONES BEING DISRESPECTED & MURDERED. That's when I see I'm NOT wearing the shoes of some martyr or self-righteous zealot, but rather my empathy and anger and beliefs are the basic tools in the fight for yet another of our worlds beings without rights. To read your blog this morning makes me feel less alone and isolated, and more EMPOWERED in knowing that I have yet another gifted and admired ally to fight with.
Thanks

Your Blog was both informative and inspiring. Though I am not new to most of what you speak of, It is necessary to be reminded of what we are doing and have done for many years. how we as a society can not sustain our lust for blood as it will eventually run out. The most interesting thing though are our motives as we should also be thinking about the reasons why we would choose to change because if they are selfish reasons, the issues may simply change form and reinvent themselves at a later date. Eg why should you release a slave? For the good of people? or to keep from losing your own way of life? Monetary reasons?. Decisions brought about by spilling blood may simply back fire at a later date when the circle of life turns full circle. It is our spirit respect and love of each other and the world we live in not just the possibility of not being able to sustain our gluttonous ways of life that should keep us from farming natural resources beyond maximum yield.

As for shock of poets old and new selling there work to mass market and media. I recall Gil Scott-Heron "revolution will not be televised" surprising me when I saw it attached to a product(Nike). You have your own reasons for your collaborations but what people should realize is that yes you are correct, they may not have even heard of you or your songs before you were collaborating with Trent Reznor or before that with rap artists or before that in poetry slams and before that with yourself friends and enemies to whom ever would or would not listen.

How ever one comes to hear them spoken, it is the word that is most important. So spread them as you can.

Whereas I respect you, and am a huge fan of your music and find you to be an incredibly intelligent person, you are forgetting one thing. Humans are animals... and we are carnivores. We need meat... our stomachs aren't designed to digest only fruit and vegetables. That's why vegans face a higher risk of contracting anemia.

Would you begrudge a lion its dinner? I think not. And they kill innocent creatures too... because it's their nature. They need it to stay healthy. And so do we.

Anthony, whereas I respect your opinion. It is quite truthfully a naive rationalization. Not only are humans incredibly set apart from animals (through pretty much all of our modern ways) but we are INCREDIBLY CAPABLE of shaping the world around us. Which means we should have the compassion and foresight to make the decision to not eat living creatures. I've been vegan for three years, and have never been healthier. People afraid of a challange often say what you said about a vegan's predisposition for UN-health... HOWEVER, ANY DIET POSES HEALTH RISKS IF IT'S NOT BALANCED. There is nothing the green earth cannot provide me, that I should feel like taking a life is the only way to sustain myself. Read a little more before you let your complacent taste buds do the talking.

The author is a scientist whose research into the properties of water lead him to discover that the structure of if changes when exposed to words, music and thoughts.

I feel you on the fundamental life-style choice thing. It's the sort of choice that really does have the greatest impact on the Earth... "New Mother Earth" Jimi's diggin' ya, where ever he dwells in the ether.

The next challenge seems to be encouraging nourishment- soul food ala ALEX GREY and/or authoring recipes. I can just see it now - you could do a performance piece/poem in a costume similar to that guy who used to appear on PBS with all those muscles... I could see Master Painter/Tantric Guru Alex Grey collaborating with ya and creating such a costume complete with meridians and acupuncture zones, nerves, all mapped out.

For the rest of us, maybe the answer is more Vegan recipe swapping.
Wouldn't it encourage more self-reliance, creativity and doing the right thing for the Earth?

One more thing. I forsee millions of potential voters simply not registering to vote and missing the boat.
Whatcha say about encouraging registration abroad?

Love,

The Iraq war in people who fought in it's own words - and not just their words, but their poetry. Height of language subtext of thoughts music explosion. I recommend it. Thnx for starting this thread and I appreciate your words, in your blog and your performance, I appreciate your urgency, I agree with you about Obama and support him too, I'd be happy if more people knew about ya, your points for veganism are right on.

Wow.

My eyes are closed, and my ears are open. I hear what you say. I must admit that I am very much into meat in my diet. I take what you write very seriously, and will read that book.

I hold nothing against you or allowing your song in that Nike commercial. Honestly, I've only been a fan of yours for 6 months or so. Fortunately, I have an amazing friend and neighbor who introduced me to you. I was instantly hooked. I immediately changed my view of my musical preferences. I have now opened my mind to real music.

I am now part of a band with my friend from across the street. I'd like to thank you personally (hopefully you'll read this) for your insight and wisdom of our world, and our country in particular. I plan to make music that means something. I cannot thank you enough for helping to peel away the decay that blocked my vision.

it talks about the power of Consciousness.. and how it can effect the world. a lot of the stuff you mentioned in your blog. The animal facts are pretty shocking. I told my self i was only going to eat meat that is kosher. Kosher animals are prayed for and killed in a way they don’t feel pain... when you eat it...you don’t eat its judgment and you can elevate its soul.

This is what I believe. I feel there is a good reason to eat meat.. And that’s to elevate the animals soul. But if the animals are killed in a judgmental way... and being abused... You are tapping into the animals negativity and also might be elevating a tortured soul.

I used to be a vegetarian for 2 years because I felt their was no good reason why I should eat other animal.. but now I know there is a good reason. I also believe some people don’t have the ability to elevate an animals soul and some how they now this and become vegans and vegetarians.

Thank you for sharing these thoughts. Never until now had I even been partially swayed to consider switching to a vegetarian or other alternative diet. I may not convert but I do have a broader perspective to reference now. I was reading Gulliver's Travels, by the way. I'm liking it too but I did look into those two books you've mentioned. I think I'll put the G's Travels down for a minute and check these out. It feels much more time sensitive that these two be read by more people.

Looking forward to seeing you live again soon. I've seen you 8 times so far and I keep coming back because you always keep things interesting.

Thank you.

I appreciate your post because it is all of what I believe in myself. Funny thing is.. part of what you posted (about factory farming) is what I am planning on writing a paper on for one of my classes. It is hard being an older student, but it is worth it.
Hopefully I will be able to get through to some of the younger students in my class!

Currently reading?
School books :)
Plus I just picked up "The Art of Racing in the Rain" By: Garth Stein

It was awesome to see you at Lollapalloza by the way.
Thank you again!

Peace be with you.

Thanks for the commentary. It's -always- nice to get some insight into your mind. Although, I thought this when I saw you in DC and I think it now--you've really misjudged Obama. Maybe not the energy behind him, but I think the man himself is still just a politician. Better than McCain, but a politician just the same.

The collective consciousness seems to be finding it conscience. That is, recognizing that we make an impact, that what we focus our energy on transforms to our desire. I agree, it's time to take subversive, direct action by "stealing the show". As an artist, that's an affirming thing to hear.

I've gone far enough down the rabbit hole to know that 2012 being right around the corner is more than a History-channel apocalyptic hype-fest. It's no accident that a myriad of ancient traditions point to this very precise time we're in as being a window of opportunity.

Though matter says we're fucked, we have the ability to change it, and that ability is quickening as we see thoughts manifest matter with less and less delay (through synchronicities, but also through our technology)

We are already transitioning into the next cycle. 9-11 was a cosmic initiation. Horrifying, yes. Evil, no doubt. Inside job, most likely. But in a larger scope, consciousness changed.

Beings are emerging in physical form as Truth Teachers, revolutionaries, and our ideas are not our own. They are part of something bigger, something undeniable in our hearts and mind(s).

No doubt about it.

In terms of Obama, I desire to share your optimism, but am still struggling with my cynicism because of his deep love for Israel and the fact that we're still set up to support them "not matter what" (oh yeah, he said that.) Just something to think about, since they've been genocidal maniacs and whatnot. Hopefully the tide of change will sweep the world, not just this strange land we live in.

Anyway, I've been listening to SunDream and lots of esoteric rap.

Reading lots of poetry as usual, but the big book of the year has got to be:
Inner Paths to Outer Space by Dr. Rick Strassman.

Best,
wanderlust

I've been a fan since before you were with Def Jam (or the American label). I respect your views and have teetered on the veg/chickenarian diet. Thanks for this.

Here's what I just finished: Parable of the Sower/Talents, Octavia Butler.

Here's what I'm reading now: Up from Slavery, Booker T. Washington.

You mentioned the fuel consumption for raising animals but what about the fuel used to raise plants and other vegetarian cuisine.
Would they not use just as much water and fuel to raise those crops?
And what about the destruction of the delicate soil all over the world to raise crops for the millions of humans? Is that not just as bad?
I'm a big supporter of you and enjoy your art and your perspective on life and society. But what we eat isn't the problem, eating meat has an impact on the world but so do veggies. I don't have a problem with your views, I'm just trying to provoke thought like you do...

smart data continuum

ryan,
i think the energy consumption ratio of producing plant food to animal food is like 1:10 (cause the animal needs to eat a lot of plants to grow) so the impact of eating meat is ten times higher than the impact of eating plants. also, a great percentage of destroyed rainforest soil is used to grow soy for feeding cattle.

Saul, I got chills reading your blog. I've been a vegan for about 8 years, and I stopped watching TV about 6 years ago, so I just learned of the commercial. The fact that you ultimately used a shoe commercial to raise peoples awarness about the real ramifications of our dietary choices on our planet is incredibly inspiring and demonstrative of how much creativity is available to us.
WOW! Consciousness has been upgraded once again :o)
