Had the pleasure of attending last nights show in Oslo.
Brilliant!!!
Even though I missed a couple of tunes it was magnificent.
He even did a number from Steves upcoming solo album, a great piece.

They were joined by Molvaer on trumpet (as he's norwegian), and I pity those who will
not get to see him perform with the band. He really added "the magic touch" to songs like "Brilliant Trees"

Klaus reported the trumpet player was Henriksen, and not Molvaer.

Thanks Klaus!

Thanks so much for that. I was so overwhelmed by the whole thing, I didnt take account of the set list.
I saw him in Glasgow and then again at the Royal festival hall, whilst I was home visiting.

Totally awsome evenings. No wonder I have been an avid follower of his music for so long 25 years.
Cheers

Hi friends!
Yesterday the concert of David here in Oslo was fantastic!
Great band, great songs, great atmosphere. Special guest in some songs the norwegian trumpeter Arve Henriksen.
The theatre was full of very enthusiastic fans of David Sylvian. Two encore.
David was looking a little bit shy in the beginning, but after the first song (wonderful world), he merged himself in to the music and created a magical atmosphere.
For me this time has been really a special event, because at the end of the concert I had the chance to meet David and the band. Steve Keith and David are very friendly and lovely persons.
Don't miss the chance to see them in concert! Priceless.

Have a nice day!

A review of the Oslo concert at Sentrum Scene September 8th 2007.

The lights go out, the floor is packed, stage is minimalistic, no mentionable décor…just the musicians instruments. On stage comes David Sylvian. Nicely dressed in brown, and with white shoes.
He smiles, looks out to the crowd and sits down.

It’s finally autumn and David can give us one of his heartfelt, usually very melancholy songs. The anticipations are high, and yes….Arve Henriksen gives a special appearance. A bit out in the show we can hear his fragile trumpet in the distance, and the he appears while David sings “Let the children come to me….” From “Snow Borne Sorrow”. This gets better and better….as near perfection as you can get. The combination of Henriksens instrument and Davids voice and melodies makes it pure heaven. If you are spellbound by Sylvians masculine, soft and dark as the night voice, you’re sold!

He sings about life, the world we live in, and how it affects us. But mostly it’s about a mood….an atmosphere…..an inner uneasiness, and songs that leaves room for reflection.
David Sylvian is very special in todays music industry. He’s the popstar that went his own musical ways. In his musical journey he has tried about all, but mostly he has been faithful to his own artistic universe. He starts it off with the Nine Horses tune “Wonderful World”, A song about anxiety, astonishment and yearning.

The music floats, sonorous and mystic, as the voice pulls us into it’s versatile world.
During the show we get more songs from “Snow Borne Sorrow”, even though this tour is about performing his own material. He gives us "The Day The Earth Stole Heaven", "Transit", "Atom And Cell", "Playground Martyrs" and "A Fire In The Forest", and many more…. Love plays a big part in his songs. He is also very social-minded, and on “World Citizen” he confronts the US invasion of Iraq. Definitely a highlight of the evening.

This is a night we will remember for a long time…..when the cold creeps in and the snow starts to fall, we can relive this moment and get that good, warm feeling inside.

Hello.

I was at the Copenhagen gig last night as well and I did count five musicians on stage. So not being nosey, but perhaps the line-up was the same as Oslo.

All the best,

All is forgiven. I know the guy on the horn/flute etc. was on/off stage and if you were sitting in a particular position, he was almost hiding behind David. But you can actually see him on the third picture you posted from the gig.

All the best,
Michael

The guy on the clarinet and flute is actually Theo Travis. He has played also in the last cd of Sylvian and, if I remember well, he was also in tour with Mick Karn 10 years ago. A great musician. He is part of the band and he will be present in all the concerts. Arve Henriksen unfortunally was joining the band only in Oslo.
Bye!

Hi again friends!
I apologize, I was wrong in my previous posting. It seems that Theo Travis will not be present during all the concerts of the David Sylvian's tour, so is not a permanent member of the band. But if you want to know more about him and about his beautiful music and projects you can go here: http://www.myspace.com/theotravis or here : http://www.theotravis.com

Went to the Bridgwater Hall gig last Friday - still reliving it now. Heard some of my favourite ever Sylvian songs such as Nostalgia, Brilliant Trees, Wanderlust, Fire in the Forest...I could go on but it would probably be nearly the whole set list. I also loved hearing the Nine Horses stuff which came across particularly well - while all the other 80's artists are merely peddling their back catalogue, Sylvian (et al) is still creating the most wonderfully inspiring music - full of solace, insight, and ultimately joy. Let the Happiness In!!

Just been to RFH concert. On the whole as excellent as he usually is. Sound wasn't perfect from where I was sat - the piano too quiet. I think that even when some songs didn't work as well as on the records, I admire Sylvian's attempt to create a new arrangement, rather than replicating the sound of the disc, which could be dull. Good to see the old white shoes making an outing too. A full house gave standing ovation. Cheers Dave.

Yes, he played the same set as previous ones. I think we were all hoping he might have given the hometown crowd an extra encore, but alas the many requests from the audience (including a few from the first Japan album) were left unsatisfied. He should have played the excellent new song that gives the tour its name - The World is Everything.

Wow,my 25 yr dream came true last night when i saw David and steve in birmingham last night,my eyes welled up as soon as as he appeared on stage,i was glued to him for one and half hours! Japans "Ghosts" was slipped into one of davids tracks and when realised a great applause was heard,i couldnt believe i was sitting yards away from him singing ghosts, absolutely outstanding..Had a lot of attention to my original 80's "Red guitar" t-shirt but was unable to get the man himself to sign it although much was done to try and meet him, sadly with no joy,but heay,i saw him and he as now as he was back then.

Could I ever explain... this feeling of love that just lingers on?
Actually it's a sense of blissfulness and grace that filled my sleep with soft dreams...
Returning with my feet on the ground... a great performance, sober, elegant, technically perfect and absolutely weel balanced between old and new materials.
Nontheless I couldn't help feeling a certain fall of emotional tension in the arrangements of the old songs. It seemed like he was playing them in order to accomplish a need of the audience rather than out of a personal pleasure. "Mother and child" and "Before the bullfight" were safe from this, the first one thanks to a really nice arrangement, the second one thanks to the great Steve Jansen who played drums that could really pierce your heart and stomach.
I lived a real moment of rapture with "Playground martyrs" which evolved in "Transit" and then with "Sugarfuel". The new piece By Steve is really astonishing!
David is a great performer whatever he plays, his voice is clean and perfect as you expect it to be, deep and warm and resonant as you always wished to.
Keith, Steve and Takuma are brilliantly matched and balanced, and the settings are wonderful for an acoustic concert as this is.
In one word: perfect!

(I will post some pictures in the next few days)

Yesterday was a great day. I went to Roma by train in the afternoon and met with a friend of mine... she was going to see Sylvian for the first time as well, like me. The weather was rainy... good for a Sylvian gig. The venue was stunning, a theatre right in the downtown of Rome, near the basil of Saint Peter.

Before the concert we went to have dinner in a restaurant near the theatre. Suddenly Steve Jansen comes by - got to shake his hand and tell him I was looking forward to see the show.

The concert was GREAT - I really mean it. Perfect sounds, true essence of minimalism. Every instrument was well balanced. Jansen is like a painter on the drums. Keith Lowe is a classy bass player, he hits the right notes at the right time... what a talented guy. I also dig Watanabe's playing: his piano is never "intrusive", his playing is so moody, atmospheric. Sylvian... well, do I need to say something?

The only bad thing of it all was a mad lady in the audience which never stopped to shout and yell bad things off to David. Where was the security? This bugged me. At some point she even climbed on stage, standing really close to David. I was afraid something bad was going to happen. A roadie took her back to her seat, but she continued to yell stupid things until the end of the concert. David mantained his self control when she took the stage. I payed lots of money to be in the second row, and that lady ruined some of the brilliant atmosphere that only with Sylvian's music is possible to achieve.

Anyway, I enjoyed the show very much...

I am so happy to hear that your first Sylvian concert was so lovely -- except for that hideous crazy woman, of course! Why was she not stopped as soon as she started toward the stage -- how is it that she was actually allowed that close to David without being detained first, and then thrown out of the venue altogether?? I don't understand this. I am truly sorry that her very loud insanity had to mar what would have been a perfect experience for you, Marco.

But very cool that you got to shake hands with and greet Steve!

Oh Marco that lady should've been removed!!! That is the behavior that most certainly doesn't belong at a Sylvian show!! I cannot believe she wasn't escorted OUT immediately particularly when she managed to climb on stage...unbelievable ..but besides that , as you say, it sounds like it was an incredible show and I'm glad you got to see him as well as meet Steve!
Everything that I have heard of the concerts has sounded incredible. And yes Keith Lowe is an EXCELLENT player I agree..

All my best Marco

Hi Jay-Jay,

the band was Sylvian/Jansen/Lowe/Watanabe plus Hayden Chisholm on sax, flute, and clarinet. Same white shoes... but the setlist was a bit different. Since his show in Bruxelles, David is not playing Waterfront and Nostalgia anymore. I wish I could hear those tracks live. But a great show as usual.

mmm so the concert was shorter, minus two songs, and they are beautiful songs also.
but i guess the contribution of chisholm is a very welcome one in the ensemble isnt it!?
tomorrow i,ll be in Amsterdam for the show,i,ll hope he,s in the right mood.
i saw the everything and nothing tour in Antwerp some years ago,and the only down thing was that his voice was overuled by the music,i guess that its more balanced now!?
i let you know how its been.

WOW,tuesday in Amsredam,i had a fantastic night at Sylvian,s gig.It was so much better than expected. What i mean is that the sound in this venue is perfect (at least where i was sitting),and the music was so well balanced with his wondefull voice.I really did like the versions they played. No he isnt a entertainer (i wouldnt like him to be) but some people cant understand he,s not interact with the audience so much by talking to them, the guy is introvert, people! i read in some review "dont expect to be entertaint, but expect to be moved" ,so right,i was moved!
(this was my third tour;in prhase of shamans, everything and nothing and the world is everything)

Just got back to the states after the excellent DS show at the Amsterdam RAI Theatre.

Here's the set list for the show:
Wonderful World
It'll never happen again
World Citizen
The Day the Earth Stole Heaven
Ride
Playground Martyrs / Transit
Fire in the Forest / Ghosts
Snow borne Sorrow
Mother and Child
Atom and Cell
Sugar Fuel
Brilliant Trees / Before the Bullfight
The Librarian
Every Color You Are / Riverman
Wanderlust

And the lineup:
David Sylvian - guitars and voice
Keith Lowe - electric bass guitar and double bass
Takuma Watanabe - piano and keys
Steve Jansen - drums and keys
???? - clarinet and sax

Acoustics at the RAI were superb and the crowd was generally well-behaved. It was a very low-key evening of DS songs new and (morphed versions of) old. The songs were mostly performed without a break and there were two encores. DS announced only two songs and twice mentioned the band members and that was it for audience interaction.

David's vocals notwithstanding, I'd have to say that I was most impressed with Steve Jansen's performance, providing the colors and textures to an otherwise rather bland mix of jazzy pop with minimalist electronics. I can appreciate the stripped-down approach, but it would have been nice to have a little more variety to the program by adding some more lively and rhythmically interesting songs from his repertoire.

This is the sixth time time I've seen DS and I was thrilled to be able to see the current tour whilst traveling to Amsterdam on business. I'm not sure if there will be a North American leg in 2008, nothing has been announced. My personal high watermark are still the Sylvian'Fripp shows.

All in all a very enjoyable evening.

Hey everyone,
I attended the show in Eindhoven (1-oct-2007) in the Netherlands and of course it was brilliant. But I wonder what the (spiritual? or religious?) symbol projected in the background (human silhouet in the midst of three circles) means, where it comes from, whatfore David has chosen this, how it is related to his work? Nobody has mention this up to now! Can anyone help me out here?
