<"PLAY" Magazine (Moskow)>: "How would you characterise your musical style?"
Alexander PIPA (Borshch): "Something like Celine Dion, only much heavier, faster, louder, with male vocals, lyrics about drinking and a complete absence of a precise musical style; roughly speaking – "rock-and-borshch", or at least "borshch-and-roll"
"BORSHCH – It's humour, drive, volume knobs twisted to maximum and thundering drum cannonades. Infectious and energetic. With their unique style and live show these guys never ever let a single punter down." <"VIVA" magazine, Kyiv, UA>
"Non-stop sonic shock plus brilliant, hilarious lyrics in Ukrainian and Russian… Totally searing, mind-blowing, exhilarating…<" HOT.7" magazine, Minsk>
Borshch - together for only 4 years, but the founder members already have vast international experience behind them. Alexander Pipa and Uri Zdorenko were the co-founders of the legendary ukrainian rock-band "Vopli Vidoplyasova" ("VV") - veterans themselves of many international festivals: "Eurockeennes" (1991), "Le Printemps de Bourges" (1991), "Festival du vent" (Corse, 1992, 1994), "Saint Amant. Rock ca vibre!" (1991, 1992), "D'ART D'ART" of Niort (1991), "La Feri de Nimme" (1993 ) to name some of the more famous back in the early 90th, as well as a host of European tours. At that time thay shared the stage with the likes of Sonic Youth and The Pixies and their eccentric compositions even gained the admiration of the one and only Jello Biafra.
In the mid 90's the paths of Pipa and Zdorenko separated for some years, but then they've got back together again with their second project-bomb – BORSHCH. Immediately after their explosive live stage debut BORSHCH blew the minds of audience and music critics alike – and were hailed "the Discovery of 2003"
<"MELODY.RU" magazine>: "BORSHCH – the sensation of 2003… This is the most energetic show that Mother Europe has seen for many a year…"
… "That damnable Ukra-Motorhead, Borshch, burst onto the stage like bats out of hell… After winning over the audience on their first visit to a venue they always return as firm favourites.
They wail about Mustapha Ibrahim, they launc into manic rhythms and thoroughly enjoy themselves, in a way that not many people do these days"…
<"APHISHA" magazine, Moscow>
By 2004 - 2 albums and appearances on all manner of Slavic Rock compilations (even on a tribute to Russian Bob Dylan - Boris Grebenchikov J ), and – gigs, gigs, gigs. Loads of clubs, next - larger venues, then – Eastern European stages. Loads of press, live broadcasts and video clips, and bang, all at once, in the autumn of 2005 – their hit "Audio Video" play-listed on Britain's BBC Radio 6.
Interesting fact: No one has yet managed to come up with a definition of Borshch's style.
<"Fuzz" magazine, St.P.>: "Are you interested solely in the punk-industrial sound? Wouldn't you like to play something a little lighter?"
Pipa: "Punk – it's what comes out best of all. It's not a musical style, it's a feeling: we can play hard rock or rock-and-roll, and it comes out punk all the same. Whatever we play becomes punk"
: "They call their music punk – god knows, perhaps, they're right… What we have here are folksy tunes, predominantly Arabic… with overtones of 1930's movies… However chaotic and bizarre, the intense, over-the-top combination all in all, eventually generates a natural harmony. If you suppress your smile and listen carefully to the songs, you'll be able to hear for yourself that they're all almost perfect…"
