I was raised in a Pentecostal church where we were taught that drinking was wrong. I know there are many other denominations that espouse that same belief. But in adulthood, after studying the scriptures, I concluded the Bible doesn't teach that. So I chose to be free to have a drink once in awhile as long as I didn't lose control and drink too much. I still believe that. I do not believe drinking alcoholic beverages is a sin. A glass of wine once in awhile even helps my digestion, but I have a question I'd like to pose to all of you. Do you think that a Christian who drinks alcolic beverages could be a stumbling block to someone else becoming or staying a Christian? Besides going to Hell myself, the last thing on earth I'd ever want to do is cause someone else to falter so that they would face that fate. I'd like to hear thoughts on this. Thanks.

I agree with that completely, however, in circumstances that the Christian who is trying to stay a Christian used to be an alcoholic, I can see that being around that person could have some impact on them 'falling off the wagon' if they're not careful. I know that they need to ask God for guidance but isn't the body stronger in situations like that than the mind and heart? I.E. Trying to do your quiet time late at night laying down would defeat the whole purpose of that because your body would be wanting to sleep. Just a thought.

Thanks for your comment. I don't know if the body is stronger than the mind and heart of an alcoholic. My ex-husband was an alcoholic and drug addict and he never conquered it until he was beaten almost to death by drug dealers. Even now I believe he would do stuff if he could get it, but he is confined to a wheelchair from brain injury and loss of one leg from the knee down. But is that urge to partake from the body or the mind? I don't know. I just don't want to be a stumbling block to anyone else. I got this response in my bulletin on this subject from a MySpace friend:

Yes, I feel like it could be a stumbling block. Romans 14:21 reads, "It is good neither to eat flesh, nor to drink wine, nor any thing whereby thy brother stumbleth, or is offended, or is made weak." I would also recommend reading the rest of of chapter 14. it sheds light on being persuaded in ones on mind of what is right and not against scripture, all scripture. I also drink wine on an occasion, may once or twice and nothing to make me close to drunk. But, I am very mindful not to be given to wine, so that I may represent god at all times. I hope this helps.

I appreciate this input as well. I would like to hear even more opinions on this. Thanks.

I feel a glass of wine once in awhile is ok and as long as you are not tempting any one to drink it to,that dont drink then I think its ok.The Bible talks about wine, JESUS turn water to wine for a wedding, He also use it as his blood at the last super...just my opinon..GOD BLESS YOU ...RICH

I feel that the issue of drinking alcohol for a Christian is so cultural...In Europe, for example, the drinking of a glass of wine with a meal and so forth is not as likely to cause confusion for the unchurched onlooker...I feel that American culture is not quite of that same mentality regarding this issue, although things have changed considerably in the past ten yrs or so...My husband occasionaly has wine with a meal when we are out to eat and does not feel convicted when doing so...Alcohol gives me migraines, so this will never be an issue for me...
Blessings,
Teresa

I think you've got to be very conscious of who you're drinking in front of and the setting you're doing it in. For some people it very well could be a stumbling block. You shouldn't run around and tell people that you have an occasional drink. Let them find out otheir own and then explain it to them.

Those are my thoughts. Personally, I have zero desire to take a drink, so it's not really an issue for me.
