Some of you maybe knew him as Mel Galley from Trapeze or Whitesnake, or even that chap that used to sit in the pub helping to make sure Carling stayed in business, busying himself away at a crossword that was no doubt full of Galleyisms (thanks Bobbit). To us, he was just Dad.

However we knew him doesn't matter, what matters is that we all share that one love of the music he helped to create.

A good (now also sadly departed) friend of mine used to say that you don't write songs, they're already there, just floating in the ether, it's just that some people are lucky to spot them and bring them to reality. He was one of the lucky ones.

We'll never be able to express our thanks and gratitude to everyone of you in person for all the love and support shown over the years and more specifically the last 6 months. I hope this goes some way towards letting you know it means the world to me, my wife Lucy, my brother Lucas and our mums.

One of the only times he ever admitted to being starstruck was when he happend to be in the same Indian restaurant as Spike Milligan. After some Dutch courage he went to Spike's table to ask for his autograph, rather than the usual fumbling for a pen my dad got his prize, a napkin marked with the sauce from Spikes Bombay Potato. Here's one of Spikes that I know would bring a smile to my dads face

Doctor O'Dell fell down a well, and broke his collar bone.
The Doctor should attend the sick,
and leave the well alone.

I'd like to think he's up there now sharing a drink with Lowell George, maybe even still doing the Times crossword, and it's on that note that I'd like everyone to raise a glass to him at the next chance you get, let's do the chap proud. Mine's a Guinness!

Can't pretend to know the pain you're all going through Marcus, as I'm fortunate enough to still have my parents, but there's a lot of love for each and every one of you ... which I hope carries you all through the ups and down of the next few days, weeks and months.

I never did get to buy your dad the Carling I promised him, but I'll definitely raise a glass of it to his beautiful soul when I next have a drink.

Thanks Marcus. I've never met a more down to earth rock musician than Mel. He took the time to talk to me when I was a young aspiring guitarist, and more recently listened and commented on my myspace songs. I will miss him, so I can imagine the loss you and your family must be feeling. My heart goes out to you.

Best wishes,

MAK

Marcus:

I think everyone knows how much I admired your Dad. He's a hero to me. Anyway I can help---just call on me.

By the way---I wasn't able to leave a message at the galley@ntlworld.com address. My computer kept rejecting it until that MailerDaemon thing gave up on it.

Cheers! James

I'm sorry I only knew Mel through his music and his MySpace. What a joy it would have been to share a pint with him. Maybe someday if I make it to where he's gone.

I don't really know what to say...

"and know that I've had times
so good
from coast to coast...
leaving my hard times behind."

the people who make music for us are Gods.
Your father....Mel...was one of those.

thanks you for his gift.

Dear Marcus and Galley family,

You are about to embark on a very personal journey that will take you through joy and pain. I lost my mom suddenly 5 years ago and it is amazing to see how it affected my life. I must say for the better. Not of course that I am happy she is gone - of course not! - but because it made me have a deeper look at myself and my life. I realized many things, changed a few and am happy I told my parents how much they mean to me.

No one will be able to feel what you will go through. You will be the only one really able to help yourself. Of course, you'll need family and friends but you will be your only companion on this journey.

Good things came out of this experience for me. The pain of losing a loved one is still vivid but you learn to live with it and hopefully turn the pain into a positive feeling, appreciating how lucky you have been to have this lost one in your life and hopefully have made the most of it.

I wish all of you courage and hope that by living a great life you will honour Mel's memory. I know that my mom would be happy if she sees me now. I am sure Mel will look at all of you and would love to see you smile when you think of him. I sure smile when I think of her!

Lots of love and affection. Laurent

Marcus,

Thanks for sharing a "behind the scenes" look at your dad. It's tough loosing a parent. I lost my dad 5 years ago this fall, and I still find myself wanting to ask him how to do something or how something works.

I remember when I was growing up and trying to figure out how to get around on a guitar neck, that I absolutely wore out the Medussa album. I've still be striving to get the tones your dad got on that record. But what I really took away was something that didn't become clear to me until years later (once I got past my "speed" phase of playing), and that is Mel was one of the best about using the space around the notes. I could your dad and Leslie West as my 2 biggest influences growing up (with a little Mark Farner/Grand Funk thrown in for good measure).

Please know that your dad reached more people than he probably ever realized. God bless you and your family.

Hello Marcus,
I never got the chance to meet your Dad, but he was so influential in my world. I grew up listening to his work with Trapeze and then with Whitesnake. His song writing ability just blew me away. My band always played some Trapeze tunes and the crowds would always go nuts when we did. We played on a regular basis, You Are The Music, Feel It Inside, Coast To Coast, Back Street Love, and Medusa. Those songs never failed to raise the roof at the club or bar we were playing at. I respected him, loved him from afar, and will miss him dearly. He truly was one of the great ones.
With deepest sympathy,
Roger Dicks

Marcus, sincere and heartfelt condolences to you and your family. Your dad will live on in your hearts and minds, and he will live on in his music. there's barely a day goes by that i don't listen to one of his tracks, and he's been a soundtrack through my life since the early seventies. I'll raise a glass to him with the utmost pleasure. take care,

Marcus - I am halfway through writing my autobiography and just happened to be writing about your old man and those other two fellows I shared so many good memories with back in the early 70's when TRAPEZE was the most amazing power trio I had ever come across. When I am done with it and get it published I would consider it a privilege and an honor to send you a copy. I will be in touch and besides, you know how to reach me. NONE of us will forget Mel and his wonderful gifts of music and humor, and just think of how many "extended families" you have across the planet. God bless you an family.

hi marcus,
i am very sorry and saddened by the loss of your father.
many years ago i bumped into(well was nearly run over by) cozy powell when he and your dad were playing in whitesnake in cardiff ! also in the car was john sykes
being at the tender age of 21 i asked cozy and your dad for an autograph,to which i was told come on in the venue ,we will sign them there
and out of sheer kindness mel sat down chatted and had a laugh with us for most of the afternoon taking time to rib cozy, sykes and neil murray
he had us awestruck and in fits of laughter at the same time
he was an absolute gentleman and will be sorely missed
my very best wishes
terry
