Category: Dreams and the Supernatural
To keep things interesting I like to change the title of the band and the songs on the set lists from time to time.  Last night Mervin's Kelp went down to Old Nick's in Horncastle and played a few jugs and pokers along with classics like Whiskers in the Jar and a few homespun goodies which ended up with slightly rude names which I will not repeat on a family webpage.

Old Nick's is a Keep favourite.  The management take excellent care of us and the locals and punters are always up for a great night, joining in, dancing and then locking us in at the end so we can't leave. We tried a few new things last night and everything went well - although our new ghostly tale "Derringham Bank", which had its debut last night, does not want to be played at Norwegian death metal speed.  I will be having a word with the Viking today.  "Brown Eyed Girl" was, as we expected, an absolute winner and it was lovely to hear a chorus of sha la la la la la la la la la la ladidas.  It's a nice song to play and sing as well so that will be staying in the set for a bit.

It's always hard to know what to do when you're writing your own material.  Obviously we want to play our stuff and get it out there but we also love entertaining people and giving them a chance to have a sing and a dance.  I think we're getting the balance about right.  What's struck me is that there are songs on our new album that we have never played live, and we probably won't now.  That's partly the nature of the songs and where they've come in our lives as people and as a band, but also because we're in the fortunate position of having a lot of songs to choose from so inevitably there's a stable of popular and successful stuff and a back burner for the ones we're not so sure of.  Sooze and I keep stealing those back burner songs and stripping them down to their basics for our Honeykeepers sets.  We always seem to find a home for things one way or the other.

Well, it's a beautiful day so I'm going out to lift my dahlias and geraniums and put them to bed for the winter.  I've a song or two cooking and a bit of an opportunity this week to bring them to life.

So, much love to everyone from Keep world, and watch this space for news about the new album and the launch event.  See you xxxxx

It was a storming gig last night, probably one of the best we've done at Old Nick's. You're right about the balance between covers and originals. Whilst we have every right to be justifiably proud of our own material - and much of it has the crowd singing along to the anthemic choruses - at the end of the day we are being paid to entertain the punters. Joe Bloggs who's out on the p*** and not bothered about the music, might just sit up and take interest if we crack into something he knows. And the punters love a good singalong. (Did I hear yet another request for TDWDTG? - that must happen every gig)

Our strength as a band is knowing when to stick the covers in, and also being able to judge when a full set of our own songs are going to be appreciated (there are plenty of those events too). It really is still possible to showcase our own songs amongst those covers, and it's something we do very well, crafting our set lists accordingly.

Anyway, it sounds like we're up ourselves and shamelessly self-promoting, so I'm gonna shut up now.

But just want to say 'WELL PLAYED GUYS!' I was proud of us last night.

er, actually, you don't sound up anything and we don't shamelessly self promote, we are justifiably happy with what we do so don't let anyone tell you otherwise.
YES TDWDTG I think it's a must now and we can pull it off. It's a top song and it will go off like a rocket at gigs.

Have fun tonight shindiggers, us honeys will be keeping the home fires burning, and knitting probably. xxxxxx
