Squincy Jones

Armed with his MacBook and mixing skills to match, Squincy Jones (aka Shane Rector) is one of Houston's best DJs keeping the syrup city on lock. A certified tastemaker, Jones fiercely dishes heaps of Dirty Third cuts, laced with his signature blend of electro, club, hip hop, pop, '80s, house, dancehall, dubstep and whatever else the mood calls for. Quality cuts are standards, so wanna-be fans, check any pretentiousness and Lady Gaga requests at the door.
An open-minded approach and encyclopedic knowledge of turntablism have made Jones a solid and welcomed name in the scene. The Houston Press news weekly even named Jones the "Best DJ" in 2008. Garnering respect from most coveted DJs in Texas and Stateside, he hustled to build up successful weeklies, including the Proletariat's "Rock Box." Dubbed by Spin magazine as "the best time you'll have all year" in Houston, the now legendary Rock Box was like the house party your mom warned you against while she was away. Spinning off Rock Box's shine--literally--Jones and fellow DJ partner Dayta kicked off Speakerboxx, another Thursday night of infectious, bass-heavy fun now going a year strong. Most recently, Jones rolled out "Rotate Fridays" at the ecclectic Block 21 with his DJ crewmates.
As for recordings, 2007 marked the release of two mixtape collaborations with DJ Witnes: the heavily anticipated SLFEMP and the duo's follow-up Do Ya Homework. The latter release copped a review that graced the pages of URB magazine. A skittering collection of late '80s breakbeats and party anthems, URB lauded Homework for its funky-fresh approach, embracement of hip hop/club classics and, not to mention, Jones' handiwork at stitching together varying beats.
In 2008 the music blogosphere was introduced to Jones via his 8-bit, Down South dubstep mix, Nintendub, and various hood hop track releases. From Swedish weblog Discobelle to Boston's Mashit.com, posts blasted that Jones "is on that screwed-dubstep-nintendo shit that you’ve heard in your dreams but you didn’t consciously realize existed yet." U.K.'s Fact Magazine listed the mix as one of 2008's "Top 20 Mixes," coming in at sweet sixteen.
It's evident that Squincy Jones is the dude to watch. With a slew of new projects piling up by the day, fans can anticipate more shakedowns soon. "I can play a set where I hop around genres, or I can play one genre straight through. Whatchu want?" The answer: more genre-melting mixes with a house-party feel. "I just like to play party music. I want people to have fun point blank, PERIOD. Don't worry about me. Just have fun!"
