So basically I compiled a brief guide to three songs which undoubtedly (atleast in my mind) represent the absolute pinnacle of musical genius and continue to thrive through the seemingly endless amounts of fried turds that clog up TV and the radio.
Before you read any further, you should realize that this is "Eric's Blog", which in turn means that I don't give a flying shit whether you agree with my bias-fueled opinions. If you want to feverishly (and untalentedly) rant about how awesome Fallout Boy's album is, well... you can write up your own blog... and then run in front of the nearest moving semi-truck saving everyone the burden of one more music idiot.
1. Radiohead - All I need
Assuming you're decently educated in landmark bands, you'll know that Radiohead has served as a monumental reminder to other bands as to what true innovation is. Basically, Thom Yorke is old enough to be your father… maybe even grandfather (assuming you're parents "learned" at a young age"), but that's besides the point. In their sixth studio album, Yorke and the gang manage to churn out one of the most hauntingly optimistic songs of their career. Thom's creeky voice groans on as a minimalistic distorted synth riff repeats in the background, creating a sense of atmospheric angst that undeniably takes you for an unexpected ride. His slightly over the top analogies ("… I am a moth, who just wants to share your light…") however, evoke small temporary pictures that allow you to feel a sense of apathy for anyone who can even slightly relate to the song. Although Radiohead is as far from mainstream as possible, its undeniable that their music can be considered beautiful in the slightest sense of the word.
2. Lazy Eye - Silversun Pickups
Chances are, if you've ever visited my profile, you've probably heard this song… I've been guilty of using it dozens of times. Can you really blame me though?… out of all my favorites songs, this one is had the most potential of becoming mainstream (thank god it didn't). Starting out with one of the catchiest guitar riffs ever, it builds up to an explosion of slight angst and obvious musical talent, while at the same time lead singer, Brian Aubert, swoons listeners with an extremely androgynous voice. Lyrics like "I've been waiting for this moment all my life… but it's not quite right" seem so perfectly relatable without being overly cliché. It never reaches a point in which you want to hit the "skip" button. From the very beginning you're convinced that it's a song you want to listen to all the way through… several times.
3. Plans - Bloc Party
Plans is one of those songs that gets unfairly lost amongst the hype and novelty of the catchier, more memorable songs of an album. Understandable? Yes… Forgivable? No… Never will you see a track such as this burning up the billboard charts or on TV lists such as the god-awful TRL, and that's where the tragedy comes in. More of a dream-like experience than a song, these four minutes of music heaven serve as the type of song you listen to late at night, while doing something mundane/self loathing such as homework (which I've found out through repetition). Kele himself has stated that Plans' main goal was to convince people to make something of their lives and take the risks necessary to do what would otherwise be impossible. The song itself is so incredibly relaxing, that a trance-like state becomes imminent, all that however is completely shattered towards the end of the song, when one of the most optimistic sounding guitar solos abruptly changes the mood and goes from kindly insisting a change in your life, to flat out accepting nothing less. I love this song… although its understandable that most of you wont. Not everyone has the same taste in music… I however am so fuckin glad that I'm one of the few who ended up liking this amazing song.
