I have a place of my own. Ever watched Six Feet Under? Nathaniel turns out to have this little room of his own with a vinyl player - I have that. Both the room and the vinyl player!

See, I had this idea that we would record the next album in our rehearsing room, as live as possible. So I thought, it might be good to have a control room of sorts, and I asked if there were any small rehearsal room available - and dear Alex showed me an empty one just across the hallway - perfect! Then as we commenced trial recordings it turned out we didn't need a control room - who would want to run between rooms anyway? But I already had the other room, and the first step was taken.

I had a room of my own - I haven't had that since I was in high school, not really. So this would be my work area, but also my own haven...

When I got the room it was a cold little room with white and black walls lined by bright yellow pine boards, and a semi-black linoleum carpet - all lit by two horrible bright industry lamps. You should see it now...

All 60s and 70s style, I painted the pine boards transparent dark brown and put two lovely orange glass lamps up in the ceiling, spreading a soft light over the thick beige wall-to-wall carpet that sits proudly under decorative items such as a Vox AC15 amplifier, an Astrosound vinyl player from the year 2 AD or so, and some cozy sitting chairs in a color that is not really yellow nor green (one of them is a bat-shaped 60s type chair). On my desk I have my MacBook Pro sided by a retro design radio, a stapler from the 70s and a round orange/red lamp that looks pretty much like Mars. On the walls you can spot the occasional Kiss posters from the mid-70s, a big Abbey Road poster (what else?), my beautiful Tanglewood acoustic guitar and my old '79 Fender Stratocaster that I've had since I was ten.

Then Johan Hallgren gave me two large crates of vinyl albums that someone left behind somewhere in the building where he works, and you wouldn't believe it! Half a crate of Jimi Hendrix original vinyls. You also have your old Pink Floyd, Sweet, Small Faces, Hair... you name it. I even found the original Virgin Killer album by Scorpions, the one with the very dubious cover that was banned in most parts of the world and also the album where you'll find Yellow Raven, a song that we've performed live with Pain of Salvation quite a few times.

I love my little den. I light incense and candles, I play old albums on the vinyl player, and I work on music - something that is getting increasingly harder in this over-communicative world. I plug Léo's Gibson Les Paul into my Vox amp and I actually record a song, just like that. The amp is one meter to my right, the vocal booth is one meter to my left, and my small Apogee Duet audio interface is right in front of me. Creativity is at my finger tips again, just like it used to be when I was a kid and had my cassette recorder with dubbing feature. And it makes me happy.

Isn't it nice to have your own place ? It feels like you can live in your own world that nobody can touch!

So happy for You lovely Daniel...

Yeah... i would like to show you my place... a candle (it's raining here in Rome and i like being in my room with a feeble light) an incense stick (lavender??), Imago playing in winamp... well, not vynil but who cares? Good stuff however! Have a nice time in your own place...

Great stuff, nice place, good equipement... what else for another up coming masterpiece huh?! I do have the same thing, it's called my bedroom!! And it's more a teenager's style than a 60's, or a 70's one! haha! ;) Good memories though. See you in 2 weeks hopefully. Greetings from France.

Candles, incense, old vinyls (lucky you, I have a few but none of them is that good, except my Beatles colletion), this 'den of creation' must be like heaven as I imagine it. I sense something really good is gonna come out of this place.
Show us some pics, if possible ^^
And thanks for your comment, you made my day too =)

Oh, man, how I would love a place of my own. I long for the day that I can do exactly what you just described, well, except perhaps something a little more contemporary. I didn't grow up in the 70's!

Sounds grand, dude!

Decorate that cage however you want, just pump out another sexy album quick-like. Is there any chance you are writing an "In the Flesh" 2? Man, what a song.

Dear Daniel.

"..Creativity is at my finger tips again, just like it used to be when I was a kid..."
the best comment i've read so far.
happy childhood moments are so inspiring when you become older.
i'm 38 & still remember my first goal when i played in a succer team at the age of 10.
every chance i get to play again i try to hold on to that innocent feeling years ago....
getting back to the basics is such a great act. it makes you understand the truely important things in life.

i wrote you about an israeli artist called "asaf avidan"
i'm sure you gonna like his music .it would really suits your den's atmosphere.
pls check him out at http://www.myspace.com/findlovenow

best wishes.

Cool! I hope you make the best album that has ever been made. :P And I'm glad you're happy.

Sometimes, in some ways, I regret watching the news and certain documentaries on TV. Because sometimes it dampens my happiness and it may even damage my health. Yesterday, when my mind was already somewhat troubled, I watched a documentary of a certain Iraqi dictator. It took my mind to perhaps the most disturbing places that it had ever been to. Today, I'm still somewhat tense and somewhat pacing because of it...

There's one thing flashed in my mind while I was reading this one. My weekend cottage near the lake (or better say house :)) and me in the attic of it. I liked how it "looks" around there, I like how it sounds retro-stylish. My wish is to turn that attic in something woody-retro-browny compartment/workplace/restplace/room/whatever-else where I'll spend the most of time with my lovely Hülya. :)
I don't know hom much you care about my jabbering at all, but as you shared your own happiness, maybe I could do it too. ;) At least we share one same thing, and that's the already mentioned vinyls. I have some Hendrix' and Floyd's, brought from the older times, my father was "into the train".
At the end I want to say... Have a nice time in your new den, hope it will be the place you will rest and you will give us many more from your great creativity. Let "low latent inhibition" be with you. (don't worry, nothing dangerous)

- Nick.

What a coincidence! In this period I found my own room in my own house in Rome!
That's the value of freedom, being free to listen everything or nothing in every moment you want to.
Hope your own room will be the place where you and your muse meet... just dinner and a bottle of good wine :)
love,

Michy

A place of your own hah? that's nice . I guess everyone has a place for himself. Unfortunately I share my place with my brother. Thank " god" we have the same musical (he doesn't like pos but we'll get to that) and movies taste so we decorate the room with no fights and swears and all this brother-to-brother situation. But when i am alone on my room i certainly enjoy it as much as you did.....It's full of memories

Peace :)

I know the feeling Daniel. I'm a little less retro about it, but I have the same thing going on, with an eDrums kit, a yamaha USB-midi keyboard and my bass/guitar amps going straight to the line-in interfaces of my PCs sound card, and I listen to, write, record and produce all my own music in about 40 square feet of space (if that). It's an amazing feeling to have a place you call your own.
