from 'steph' at ZERO mags advert dept.

Hey guys,
I'm reaching out to you from Zero magazine, Northern Calfornia's largest FREE alternative music magazine serving San Jose, San Francisco, Oakland, Berkeley, Sacramento, and all in between. We've been rockin' the 18-34 age demographic for 13 years and still going strong. Our magazine is available the 1st of each month both in print and online at www.zeromag.com

I've got a few ad spaces to fill in the January 1 issue of Zero with Wolfmother on the cover. I understand you guys are a local band and the budget is tight, but I'm sure I can hook you up with a good price and it's the presence you need. This would be great for any upcoming shows in January or just let the people know who The Golden Gods are.

Let me know if there's anything I can do.

Thanks,
Steph

so i wrote back...

wow, i don't know where to start.

first off, we're hardly a 'local band'. we're from the bay area, but we played the majority of our shows on the road. we have a record in stores nation wide and have gotten some amazing support from (and did dates on the road with) bands that we looked up to. (the dwarves, zeke, supersuckers, priestess, three inches of blood, the bellrays etc)

your mag gave us a paragraph in a local section in november 2003. and then never wrote about us again until you reviewed our record in 2006. there was not one word in ZERO MAG about our journey from point A (playing 'The Blank Club', a mediocre venue in san jose, ca - run by the same guy that runs ZERO MAG) to point B (our record company sending you a free cd). you could have reviewed shows, you could have done a feature story, you could have mentioned our name once in those three years, but did not.

secondly we broke up in sept.

so if you're trying to convince me that you're a happenin' mag that's got it's finger on the pulse of music, you just failed. for you to come begging a dead band for advertising dollars confirms what i already knew: you and your mag are fucking clueless.

why don't you run along and do another story about the odd numbers.*

-rick davis.

*the odd numbers are a san jose, ca band that's been around for like 15 years and they're in pretty much every other issue of their mag.

This is when I miss BAM Magazine--remember them? When it was local? And the Bammies? sigh . . .

that was fucking hilarious, i literally had to laugh outloud.

what's not funny is me just figuring out today that you guys broke up back in september....

i only found out cause i dropped by to steal your url address in order to forward it to a friend.

i can't tell you how many friends i turned on to you guys.
myself and RB mutherfucking suave once discussed "who is the best band we discovered on myspace?".
and, after considering my argument for ya'll, we both agreed you guys were the best.
makes me well up to see so much majestic rock fade into history....

thanks for the music *sigh*

Fuck yeah, Rick.

Poor kid-probably some lame internship so she can take her 'first step up into the biz' or some bullshit.  Some new mag here sent us kind of the same thing...they'd 'consider reviewing our CD' if we bought some ad space for fucking SIX HUNDRED DOLLARS, becuase that'd apparently be really good for us to 'get some exposure'.

There are some real tools out there, man.

Totally classic Rick!! Good one!! I think one of the funniest and stupidest reviews for a record was in that 'zine when one of the reviewers compared Bottles+Skulls to DANZIG?!? WTF?!? Makes me think the same people that review records there never go out to a show unless it's some big Queens of the Stone Age one at the Fillmore....as if they have no time to see smaller bands in the scene doing some very signifigant shit out there. Not to say that bands like QOSTA aren't doing some interesting things musicially, but fuck man, even though you have a job, go listen to some music that's not on the radio....that's what this site and so many other sites are for. I think whomever this guy is above is just out of touch with what is going on in a local effort, and was given the unenviable task to ask you guys above that. I know when I was living even in the south bay, I always tried to make it to a good show that was happening here in SF, whether it be at a place like CW Saloon, Bottom of the Hill or even El Rio. People whom work at music magazines, should stay in touch with what's going on on not only a national, international scale, but local one at that.

So are you guys back together now?
