Yesterday held a series of firsts of me, none of which are particularly important or interesting but I'm going to mention them anyway to pad out this blog. The first first (should have thought this through better) was that I left my exam early for psychology (largley because I found it quite easy and was feeling confident) hadn't done that before sso it seemed unique to me. The second first was that I had the first meal not cooked by myself this term for lunch (simple burger and chips in the bar). The final first was for the first time since coming to university I ordered a take-away (dominos to be specific, hadn't had one in about a year and got a discount). Such a fun and exciting life I live in during my exam.
Well that's out of the way now. As I promised I will now talk about the society guild awards that happened last night. Unfortunately I wasn't actually there so I can't really comment on the evening though I've heard good things (like members of the SU having nice chats with our people there and being friendly as strange as it sounds. Oh and lots of wine). However, I can comment on the nomination process, for us at least, I'm sure it went better for other societies.
Our first knowledge of the night was when one of our members got bored and started scanning the term planner for upcoming events, this was roughly two to three weeks ago at which point I remembered someone had been to a meeting where this was mentioned so asked him if he could remember any details. Unfortunately he couldn't so offered to e-mail the SU to find out. Surprisingly they didn't response (a true shock I know). Eventually it was brought up again at the committee meeting last Monday (the 14th with the event happening the 18th) and the next day I e-mailed the SU again to find out what was happening. Against all known laws of nature, two minutes later I got a response saying that if I could get the nominations in by the end of the day we could still be considered (nominations were meant to have been entered by the 5th). After some hurried work by me and ASP we quickly filled out nominations for society of the year, most improved society and a society commendation for ASP himself and sent them back about half an hour before the end of the SU's day.
Next we waited. And continued to wait without hearding anything further until Thursday when ASP e-mailed to confirm where the venue was as it hadn't been announced before. At that point we heard that we may have been shortlisted for an award and our hoped rose. Next the entire student body heard that we'd managed to make it onto the shortlist for both society of the year and most improved society (even if they didn't quite get our name right).
Finally as a result last night not only did ASP get his personal commendation (well, and IOU one certificate but it's a start) but as a society we also got most improved. Just have to make sure we get Society of the Year next year, and that I go to enjoy the large amounts of wine I've heard of.
At the bottom is the first in a series of comics over my next few blogs stolen from Penny Arcade, nice story line but some references may be lost if you don't know the characters so I recommend reading all of their comics some time, it's good.
