LIVE MUSIC
Live music this month comes from The Big Bang and Copter, ripping through the farmyard with a mix of blues tinged, ragged rock and roll, and footstomping mayhem.
The Big Bang have established themselves as one of the most exciting, visceral and enigmatic bands the U.K has to offer, creating Rock and Roll from the old school that exudes both clatter and class. Having played shows with Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Editors, The Immortal Lee County Killers and The Datsuns to name but a few, July 2007 also sees the release of their debut album "Shoot the Freak" on ColdRice Records. With the NME claiming that they are "undoubtedly the best unsigned band in Birminhgam" and that they have "balls the size of rocket launchers!!" you sure ain't gonna want to miss this performance!
Copter come from Mars via Birmingham, dress in uniforms, have a fully functioning android (with a Theremin for a head) that takes the lead on some songs and a preacher cum front man who spends most of his time in the audience or on top of the speakers. They effortlessly mix samples and space age comic book themes with high energy, dirty low down rock and roll. Come and pray through every storming, shaking minute of their set - who could fail to love a band with an on stage robot and their own 3d comic?
"Sci-fi theatrics morphed with soulful rock 'n' roll from a six-piece who feature a robot droid called M.I.L.O among their numbers. Bonkers, but in a totally brilliant way." NME
They have played with John Spencer's Blues Explosion, The Dirtbombs, The Soledad Brothers, Mr. Airplane Man, The Immortal Lee County Killers, Speedball Baby, Kid Congo Powers, The DT's, Bob Log III, The Sugars, The Dexateens, Rocket Science, The Ponys, Heavy Trash, (phewee) and so many more this list would just go on!
Copter's debut album 'STRANGEST TALES' was recorded by Matt Verta Ray (Madder Rose/Speedball Baby/Heavy Trash) in one week at his NY Hed Studios on Ludlow Street, Lower East Side, New York and the punk rock and soul history can definitely be heard and felt on the album.
IN THE BARNYARD
As usual The Cobra Club DJs will be whipping up a line dancing frenzy fit for a shotgun wedding, with a bit of rockabilly, punk, reggae, soul, country and of course some good old cheese thrown in for good measure.
Due to the rather inclement weather there is a chronic shortage of hay and straw bales in Cornwall so the barnyard decor will be relying on yet more cardboard wonders; and if anyone out there can line dance then please feel free to take the floor and lead the crowd through some moves! All hay and straw bale donations greatly appreciated!
Ping-pong and scrumpy will surely make an interesting combination as the evening progresses and the visuals will remind us all what makes a good hillbilly. As always there will be prizes for the most enthusiastic and twisted Cobra Clubber.
