Current mood:  hopeful
Category: Life

Okay, it's gotten to the point where I'm sick of seeing and feeling the
sheer panic of people in this country because of the economy and not
doing anything about it.  I know I can't solve everyone's problems but
I do believe if we all tried to be a little more comfortable despite
the situation of our economy we could just maybe help each other out
with some ideas on how to be more thrifty or find cheap (or free!)
entertainment.  I tend to be about as thrifty as I can possibly be in
many areas of life so I can comfortably indulge in the things that are
a bigger expense.  I have always been that way whether I've had a ton
of money or nothing in the bank.  It is how I grew up and I consider
the value of money to be one of the most important things my parents
ever taught me.

This blog will be something that I will continually add to.  As I think
of the ways that I have learned to be conscious I will post them on
this blog.  I encourage everyone else to also check back often and add
any tips that you may have.  Like I said I believe the more we can do
to help each other the more we can all relax at least just a little and
make this time easier to get through.

Cheers,

Shannon

*****   Instead of renting movies plan a DVD swap with friends, family or coworkers for the weekend.

*****   Utilize a Redbox that is on your way to work or school.  You
can find all new releases and it is only $1 per day.  If you go to
www.redbox.com you can also sign up for their text alerts and you will
get a free rental code every Monday for the movie of your choice.

*****   Skip coffee at your local coffee shop twice a week and save $416 a year on a $4 drink.  Skip the coffee four times a week and save $832 a year.

*****   Have yet to make the switch to digital cable?  As long as you
have internet access you can watch most shows and many movies FREE on
www.hulu.com.  They have Friends, Family Guy, The Office, etc... and it
is all LEGAL!

*****   Check out this website to find completely green and awesome ways to clean carpet and get out stains.  It all costs a matter of pennies and it is 100% safe and healthy for humans and pets alike!  I have found that cleaning carpets especially with baking soda and vinegar works much better than any sort of solution I have bought.  Go here for the instructions:
Cheap, green and the BEST way to clean carpets

*****   Are you a gamer?  Do your kids love video games but don't have a lot of variety because of the cost of a new game?  Use Goozex to trade games for other games you would enjoy for only $1.00 per trade.

*****   Love books?  Do you have shelves or boxes full of books you have read and can't seem to part with?  Maybe this will be enough of an incentive.  Go to Book Mooch and 1. type in books you want to give away.  2. Receive requests from others for your books.  3. Mail your books and receive points.  4. Ask for books from others with your points.  It's as simple as that!  It's a great way to get rid of clutter and also get some new books that interest you!

You go girl...tell it like it is. We all have the ability to make our lives better without the help from the government unlike the crooks who started this debacle. Now one thing that would make my life better is a new disc from you lady!!! Keep rocking Shannon.

Kevin OConnor...doesnt know who you are either

Being thrifty with your money is what we all should be doing in this economy. Nice suggestions Shannon! But let's not lose sight that sometimes you do need to fork out the moola. Like...when ya get your tax refund and there's a beautiful Desert burst Les Paul for sale at your local Music shop! LOL!

Instead of buying that book, check it out at the library. Many libraries also have great CD and DVD collections, including titles you might not be able to find at Blockbuster. (And in the interest of full disclosure, I do work in a library.) We're likely going to drop our cable - the over-the-air broadcast HD channels are breathtaking!!! And FREE!!! Bag up little ziplocs of chips from a larger bag at home instead of buying the small bags either at the grocery store or out of the vending machines.

I've only recently gotten back into the groove of using my local library. The coolest thing about it, besides being free, is that in Ohio (where I live) nearly every library in the state is networked together. So, you can go on the library's website and search for... whatever, a book or a movie or CD. If any of the libraries on the network in the state have it, you can request it and it will be sent to your library for you for free. When it arrives, you get an e-mail to let you know that it's in and they'll hold it for you. How freakin' cool is that? I'm done with renting DVDs. I'd spent hundreds of dollars over the years in late fees.
No more!

The library system is set up kind of like netflix, in that you may be on a waiting list for a particular item, but you can request as many items as you'd like, except that you have to pick it up from the library, it's not mailed to your house! lol! I'm really just now getting into using the system and seeing the benefits. If your state has a similar library network, I'd suggest that you take advantage of it.

Here's another: Walk! I've moved into town so I can walk to most places I wish to; uptown, and catch live music there, or to the Cultural Cener, and catch Mountain Stage (where I got to see you play, a few years ago). I still budget in live music, I just don't catch the big dollar band anymore, now I only attend the smaller venues.

Are you a Mega Touch addict like me when you go out to a bar/restaurant? Look up your favorite game online, play at home and save the $5 or $10 extra you would spend at the bar.

If it's too far to walk to the post office or something, look at garage sale bicycles and ride there. Lots of good 3 speeds and other bikes can be found and you're recycling! Maybe add a basket or rack to carry your stuff safely. Learn how to sew a little and practice on a backpack or messenger bag for yourself. It gets dirty soon anyway and you'll always be proud just by trying.

All I can say is Well Said!! It doesn't matter how much money you have it's what you do with what you got. learn to live off what you make. As long as you earn you can be proud. We are all a little too spoiled in this Age of Technology. The one thing I am sure of is America has faced a lot of tough times and we always come out the better for it. The cheap (or free) entertainment is everywhere. Support your local bands.

Beautiful, Shannon. Hey, just heeding your advice on coffee would obviously make a significant difference! Instead of people being so obsessed with "I need to make more money", it just makes perfect sense to be instead thinking more simply, like, "how can I stretch my dollars and live with my current income?" Where I live and elsewhere, people are getting together and forming cooperatives to buy provisions in bulk to save money, too.
Sharing and common sense can beat this crisis!!! :)
