RAVE RAVE RAVE: Congress finally passed a hate crimes bill that includes sexual orientation. Thank you!

RAVE: Today is my big bro's b-day. I sent him a text at midnight last night.

RANT: If he got out of bed to read it, he may never speak to me again.

RAVE: All of our home repairs from August's tornado and hailstorm are done. We had the final inspection today.

RANT: Naturally, the insurance estimate didn't cover all the costs, so we ended up with lots of out-of-pocket expense. Define "replacement cost."

RAVE: Productive week. I'm working on revisions for my 2011 book titled, She Loves You, She Loves You Not...

RAVE: But before that book comes out, January ushers in the publication of By the Time You Read This, I'll Be Dead. More about that book in the days ahead.

RANT/RAVE: One of my foster kittens got sick (not eating/diarrhea), but she seems better now. All four of them are ready to go back to the shelter to find their forever homes.

RANT/RAVE: I'm getting a cold. I refuse to get a cold.

RAVE RAVE RAVE: Had front row center seats for Wicked. OMG. I have been changed for good.

RAVE: The hate crimes bill also covers gender identity.  When Obama signs this into law (as he's said he will) I'll stand yet again and proudly exclaim, "That's my president!"

RAVE: I HAVE A NEW HOME! All the uncertainty, all the hassle and headache and heartache of trying to get out of here... is gone.  The girl I'm moving in with was awesome, extremely friendly, and I kept laughing as she apologized profusely for how filthy her place was... when it was immaculate by comparison to this place I'm in now.  When I pulled out my current state ID card at the end of our little visit to look at the place, just to make everything clear in terms of how comfortable she was with me, she was excited -- with an "Oh, cool!  So, you used to be a guy, then... here I thought you might be into girls, I almost hit on you..."  I had a guy friend there with me, who backed me up when I said, "Actually... I am."  Funny part is, the significance of "I almost hit on you" didn't register until several hours later.  Then it was like, "Wow... ummm... way cool!"

RANT: I had to turn down another offer that would have been awesome, too... here in a completely non-rural area, in fact in the middle of a small neighborhood just a block or two from a major Park & Ride hub, she's got this little place where she keeps chickens (fresh eggs every morning, how awesome is that?) and plenty of room for gardening out back... two dogs -- a big English Sheepdog (he's friendly, but... to be expected, right?) and another dog who's almost as big... I'm not familiar with breeds enough to know what she was but she's a sweetheart too.  We hit things off really well, and it hurt to realize that I was the only one she'd had look at the place so far.

RAVE: Just because I'm not moving in with the chickens and the dogs doesn't mean it's "goodbye, good riddance."  She's offered me ground for a garden, and to help me learn how that works.  I have long wanted to do that; other than a very few brief experiences in other people's already-flourishing backyard gardens, I've not really touched the earth like that, never known that joy... and I know it can be a great joy!

RAVE: The girl I'm moving in with, takes one cat at a time to foster from the local PD's little "shelter."  Only one, and only cats, because she's fairly active and can't be around enough to care for more than that.  That was one of the things that first attracted me to the place, though -- I thought of all the fun things I've heard from Julie about her fostering adventures, and I know all too well how many kittens -- very much adoptable, not old and worn but ready to begin to live -- are "put down" simply because there's no room to keep them.  Such an ugly euphemism for euthanasia... "put down..."

RAVE: My mom is buying me a new bicycle very soon.  The old Schwinn Varsity I have is currently in need of repair after I attempted to change the rear inner tube; I'm certain that all it needs is someone who knows how to reassemble the shifting mechanism, but I don't have the requisite tools or knowledge, or the money to pay someone who does.  I'll certainly see about finding a home for it, though.  I think with some care, some time and effort, this could be a really nice bike again.  I had no idea what it was when my folks picked it up for $20 at a garage sale in 2000 to replace the bike I'd just had stolen.  Until I was looking up where to buy the inner tubes, I didn't even realize how old it was; because it uses 27" tires, not 26" ones, it was made no earlier than 1969, but likely in the early 70's.

RAVE: I get to be there and have a say in the selection process for my bike... which means I can get the angled crossbar ("women's style") which will make bicycle transit much more feasible.  I won't have to worry about limiting my clothing selection to jeans, to avoid flashing everyone in town as I mount and dismount.  That's a huge bonus for me, and there are probably a few folks around who would be just fine without having to look up my skirts!

RAVE: So many beautiful, wonderful, happy things in my life right now... and I'm not the least inclined to ask "When is this all going to cave in?  Where's the big awful thing that's going to take me down?"  I just know that life is good, and that I can keep it that way.

RANT/RAVE: I missed RENT! Broadway Tour when it was here in the Bay Area, and I'm not sure I'll make it to Wicked, either... and Kylie Minogue's North American debut concert came and went while I stayed home. Even Leonard Cohen will move on through here without me.  The good part is, I can still enjoy all of these things -- the music and the musicals -- without getting caught up in "might have been" and "wish I could have."    There is no future, there is no past... No Day But Today!

I saw Wicked in NYC. By far one of the best plays I have ever seen. Only the second time I saw Rent on tour with two orginal broadway cast members was a play as awesome.
