There's a new place that just opened up here in Pittsburg, Kansas...Freddy's has the BEST burgers around. They're steakburgers. You know, the thin kind. So you HAVE to have the double burger. And they have those little skinny fries. Damn. Awesome. HAVE...TO...GET...SOME....

OH, can't wait to hear the song you're writing and dedicating to us! nudge, nudge :P

Naw, Matt! Blogs don't hafta make sense. We're still gonna watch your video blogs regardless because you're the man. Oh, and as far as burger joints go:

If you ever come back to Minnesota, I got a couple of recommendations. Should be headed towards Duluth, cross the Blatnik Bridge over to Superior to the Anchor Bar on Tower Avenue. BEST BURGER EVER! I recommend the Hawaiian(Swiss Chez, Pineapple, Fried Onions). If you head to the Twin Cities, swing on over to the Lion's Tap in Eden Prairie. The burgers practically melt in your mouth. They're that good.

Anyways, great to get another blog from ya. Been a while. And I can't wait for "Burning The Days" to drop soon.

I love Monty Python, especially The Holy Grail. You are so lucky to see Eric Idle. Eddie Izzard is one of my favorite comedian/actors. If I were choosing a great place to get burgers, it would either be Denny's or Friendly. Have fun on the CBS Early show, and I can't wait to catch your Highline Ballroom show at the end of the month. Take care... Great Blog!

Hey Matt! I don't really eat much red meat but my friends love the burgers at Red Robin. The closest one to me is in the Blackstone Valley stores right off the Providence-Worcester turnpike in Milbury. I know Red Robins are everywhere though! Then you can swing through RI and get an Awful Awful at Newport Creamery!:)

Hey Matt! Good to hear from you yes a blog was much needed. I am also glad you confirmed your August 30th show with Richard which I am totally psyched about. The show is the day before my birthday and I must say its starting to get a little freaky. Back in August of 2001 a VH show was 2 days before my birthday, last year it was the day after my birthday and this year its the day before. Hopefully, next year it will land on my birthday for the big 3-0. Either way yet again your my birthday present and this year is going to rock. Looking forward to the morning show and the concert and seeing you and Richard together again you guys rock! Be well. See you soon.

Burger joints...ordinarily, this should be a very easy and straightforward answer. However, there are a lot of things to consider - such as:

Are we talking single, double or triple burgers?
Are we including cheese, or are you lactose intolerant?
Are we thinking about no bun, or wheat buns or other types of healthier buns I'm not aware of?
Do patty melts count, or are they just reserved for people over 50?

With all of that being said, I live in Nashville and there are plenty of "burger joints" to choose from. The knee-jerk reaction is to go "mainstream" and give the old "Rotiers" answer on Elliston Place behind the now defunct Tower Records. But I'm going to go obscure on you Matt...it's just how it needs to be. The Corner Pub (Midtown) on the corner of 21st Avenue and 20th Avenue outside of Vanderbilt has the best cheeseburger I've had in a long time.

I won't bore you with the details of why I think this way - you just need to trust me and try it for yourself. The crinkle-cut fries are a nice touch as well.

this had to have been the most random blog you've ever done...plugging a show, to burgers, to Steely Dan, to Eddie Izzard, then hand gestures...love it!!!

Burger Joints: My fav is probably Burger King, their Steakhouse Burger is AWESOME! In n' Out's good too, but I go there for Animal fries...I'm also a fan of Fuddruckers burgers, their buns soak up a lot of the blood though...(I like my burgers medium rare)

The Burger Joint I recommend is..."Val's Burgers" in Hayward California. Grilled to perfection, get a baby burger thats 1/3 of a pound, Mama burger which is 1/2 pound, then a PAPA burger which is a pound of delicious burger! I went there for my 18th b-day! And you gotta order a milkshake with these burgers...absoulutly delicious

Eddie Izzard is HILARIOUS!!! Two of my favorite routines is when he talks about how he wants to join the army, and him speaking french, "The mouse is under the table, the cat is on the chair, and the monkey is on the branch." Both on his Dressed to Kill DVD.

BTW...I smell a contest...have the best "whatever" and spend a night at a burger joint with Matt Scannell...

Ya know what's close to LA? Hawaii! OK, not really. But it's by far the closest starting point. So swing on by. :)

When you're in NYC next week stop by Royale. It's on Ave C and 9th and it's amazing. It was one of my old stomping grounds. It's got a great outdoor patio and a lot of obscure beers, so it's a cool place to chill. The Royale with cheese is the way to go. I wish I could be there! Any chance you'll be in the NY area at the end of September? Make it happen Matt! Or there's always Hawaii...

Hey Matt, thanks for the blog.
Chicago, the best burger is at Rosebud Steakhouse-The burger is a huge 12 ounces, and so juicy the kitchen should consider issuing bibs. The burger comes on a soft chewy pretzel-dough bun, its sensational--with or without melted cheese.
Spaced is a great show. I am a fan of the BBC and Eddie Izzard (saw him in Chicago recently) as well . The british have such great humor.
Summer is good in Chicago....wish it would never end. Be well. Dawn

Given your time here in Nashville, I'm sure you've been to Rotier's (on Elliston), Brown's Diner (corner, almost, of Hillsboro and Blakemore) and Fat Mo's (last I knew was on 8th).

Talk about a HOLE, have you been to Bobby's Dairy Dip on Charlotte? It's more a stand than anything else,,open only in the summer..That place, its customers, it's vibe, etc could be an entire record!

Miss you.

Okay Matt you've asked for it so here ya go!

While you're in NYC

Just around the Highline Ballroom area which is on W 16th between 9th & 10th Avenues there are a couple of good places.

walk out of the club and make a right to 10th Ave make a right onto 10th Ave and walk up 6 blocks to
The Empire Diner
210 10th Avenue and 22nd Street
The Empire Diner is classic NYC diner. Prices are Average and food is good. Eat inside or outside cafe style, Burgers are okay with a good variety menu, Breakfasts are great, OJ is fresh squeezed in a machine that sometimes makes a lot of racket! Sitting at the Empire gives you a great view of NYC Chelsea Lifestyle as it walks, runs and sashays by.
You can see a picture by going to empire-diner dot com

Also near the Highline
Pop Burger
58-60 Ninth Ave between w14th and w15th Streets
checkout thier website at popburger . com
Good Burger, Great Ambience, thier website is playing Start Me Up by the Stones

Now for a Legendary hole in the wall burger joint in NYC
Corner Bistro in the West Village
331 W4th St and Jane St.
Some crtiques of the place
"Loud, Grungy, Dark"
"Crowded"
"Burgers served with Bacon & Cheese on a paper plate that turns to a messy meal, but what do you want for $6.00"
"Where else can you get a draft beer in NYC for $2.50!"
"DOn't expect great service or even a bartender that speaks, he nods at you when it's your turn to order and brings you what you've ordered. He doesn't ask hows the burger, he knows its the shit"
Don't go at diner time, best time to go is at 2-3 pm Mon Thru Wed.

If you're headed over to New Jersey, these are my faves.

The Fireplace
RT 17 North
Paramus NJ
Open Hearth Chargrilled Burger Patties with Gravy Fries, COndiments table is geneorus with free onions pickles and steak sauce. A place my dad yused to take me to and now I take my son when we just want to get togehter for a male bonding experience. They also offer up other stuiff like hot Roast Beef sandwiches, Fish Fillet, Fried Chicken and Fresh Pizza.

The Ironhorse
20 Washington Avenue
Westwood NJ
Has a Railroad Theme as it is hundreds of feet away from the Westwood Train Station. Across the street from a quaint center of town park with a Gazebo.
The burgers are fresh hand patted burgers stuffed with cheece, The Cheese Stuffed Burger is their specialty. keeping with the Railroad theme the fries are calle Railroad Tie Fries and are just as big.
website is as follows
theironhorseonline . com

Let me know if you ever make it to any of these places.

Have a great visit!!

SPACED RULES!!!!!!!!! OMG I am SO chuffed you like it, I've loved it for years - Simon Pegg = genius!

Know what? You should check out Black Books if you haven't already. If you like Spaced you will LOVE Black Books. Guaranteed.

Seems weird to hear you say Eddie Izzard the way you do, to rhyme with Gizzard: we pronounce it Izz-ard. So good to know the Izzard/Python/Spaced love crosses the big watery boundary so easily!

I'd love to recommend a decent burger joint in the hopes you may actually get your arse over here and try it out but I'm not seeing any evidence of that likelihood! So instead I'm just going to reiterate my Black Books recommendation in lieu of a food place.
TRY IT!

Burger Joints well, lets see its pretty hard to screw up a burger but I'm sure it can be done. As far as awesome eats my votes go to pretty much the standard chain restaurants Applebees and Ruby Tuesdays both are pretty good and have a extensive burger menu and although I have never been there I hear Fudrucckers and Red Robin are good as well.

As far as mom and pop hole's in the wall. There is a place on Long Beach Island NJ called Sweet Jennys that also has an extensive burger collection in fact they named it the TNT burger is whatever that means. Well happy eating! I hope you enjoy your burger journey and let us know your reviews.

Hey Matt,

Next time you are in PA try the Half Moon Saloon in Kennett Square, PA. They specalize in exotic wild game burgers. Personally, its chicken cesar salad for me but my husband has had the wild boar and ostrich burger there. Apparently they are supposed to be healthy for you too, oposed to ground beef/chuck. The Food Channel did a segment on their restaurant too. Their web address is halfmoonrestaurant.com. Check them out.
