I have come to realize the many functions of the vacant lot in back of my apartment in Bangalore (the technology center of India). Some functions I have personally observed:
1. A hangout spot for local boys at night and urban livestock at all times. 2. A long term/short term parking lot for various cars and commercial trucks. 3. A community dumping ground for various forms of litter which make up piles of trash scattered about. 4. A toxic/non-toxic waste elimination area where litter is burned to pollute the air when some passer by decides the piles of trash have become to large. 5. A fully functional bathroom where above mentioned livestock and any human passers by just go in and piss and shit wherever. I was a little disturbed just now to go out to my balcony to have a cup of coffee, and a break from coding, when a group of 10 or so barefoot school girls were passing by all of them decided to scamper into the lot and pop a squat right in front of me. Just then a local dog came by and took a shit on some trash.
Earlier I saw cows eating from the same trash pile and shitting there as well.
I’m a little confused as how this lack of sanitation doesn’t lead to major health issues like disease...I’m glad I brought my antibiotics. Just wanted to share some of the charm of India.
Cheers and Happy Easter, Adam
