VENEREAL MESSIAH
1. hello troops, how u doing right now? Who's answering my intie? Introduce urcelf and the rest ov the flesh..
VM - This is Mike (the brutal postman!), guitar-slinger and drum programmer of Rochester, NY's gore-gods, VENEREAL MESSIAH!!! Also in the fold is Barrett, who provides the most gutteral vocals on earth!!! ha ha We're stoked to be doing this interview with you!!
2. tell me more about "engraved in gore"… r u satisfied ov the recording process?
VM - Absolutely!!! We do all our own recording, and have learned a lot about the process in the past couple of years. So we think this is the best recording released by us yet. The first three songs on ENGRAVED IN GORE are the newest ones we have. The rest of the disc is comprised of our Hooked Flesh 2005 demo and a live set from 2006.
3. do u have a drummer sessionist?? How do u play live since the drum is programming?
VM - No, I program all the drums and make a cd of the set's drum tracks when we play out live. Then, it's just me with my guitar (and the cd player) and Barrett with his mic. Pretty simple but very effective!!
4. what is vm sets like? Do u have a lot ov shows right now?
VM - We played more last year, just to get our stage legs and start spreading the disease of Venereal Messiah. This year, we've concentrated on writing newer material and are getting ready to start playing some summer shows soon, with the new tracks in the set!
5. how do u go on writing lyrics? Who's in charge?
VM - Barrett is the man in charge for lyrics. I'm more satisfied writing a sick riff and getting a song together, and then letting him rip it up vocally. We both come up with song titles...the sicker, the better!!
6. who made the logo ov vm?do u love brutal gore arts?
VM - Barrett's brother-in-law came up with it. He likes to mess around with drawing, so we asked him to do it. He did a few and that was the best one. We figured it looked like a grindcore logo, and we grind, so it fit! As for brutal artists, yeah, we love them!!! Studio Sho is AWESOME and you can't go wrong with Tony Koehl.
7. who s ur musical and non musical influences?
VM - Besides all things brutal, I know Barrett is into a lot of punk and old school rap. As for me, I love alot of classic metal, rock, and jazz. I think some jazz musicians can be just as brutal as metal ones!! We both also like going to shows, getting in the pit, and hanging out with fellow metalheads. We started this band because, first and foremost, we fans!! We're both also huge horror movie fans as well, which helps inspire the sickness!
8. does print zine exist der in ur country? can u mention some?
VM - oh yeah! METAL MANIACS is my metal bible. PIT is also another great publication. There's also UNRESTRAINED! from Canada which is awesome. I'm sure there are countless underground 'zines as well.
9. do u have more contaks hir in 3rd world country?specially in the Phil?
VM - I know Barrett has countless contacts globally, especially where you are and Indonesia. As a matter of fact, Barrett knew Manos (Greece) who put out Engraved In Gore.
10. hows ur relationship from sevared?is it easy to be part ov it?
VM - That relationship is tight, since Barrett runs Sevared Records!! ha ha But seriously, when Barrett and I got this band together, he thought it would be too easy to release stuff on his label, and wanted to shop our demo around to see if other labels dug it (which they did!!). We haven't officially released anything under the SEVARED RECORDS label yet, but that doesn't mean we won't. It's all up to Barrett and that's cool with me. In fact, I'd like to start my own label, just to release our stuff, and have Sevared exclusively distribute it. That way, he doesn't have to stress about releasing it when he's got such an amazing bunch of releases coming this year!!!
11. do u hav new material ryt now?wat can we expexk?
VM - as a matter of fact, we do!!! We'll be releasing a split with CHAINSAW DISSECTION this summer with 4 brand new tracks. We've got awesome artwork for it and, after listening to the master copy, it's gonna rule!!! And later on this year, we've got a split with BOWEL STEW that we're gonna work on!!
12. how do u see vm as an influence to some other bands in the near future?
VM - We don't see ourselves that way, but it would be cool to hear that we were an influence on some cool band. There's a couple bands we've played with that totally supports us off stage by wearing our shirts and cranking up our music. We've even seen a cell phone picture of one band thrashing up their practice space while playing our demo!!! We are totally in debt to them for that!!!
13. what s the contribution ov vm in the ug scene?
VM - We're trying to bring extreme metal back to our city. We used to have a lot of cool bands, local and national, come through. But lately, it's kind of dried up. But there's a new wave of brutal bands starting to build up and we're proud to be a part of it!! We're hoping to put this city back on the metal map!
14. aside from being part ov vm wat makes u guys busy?
VM - Barrett is definitely busy with Sevared. It is his full time job and he enjoys the hell out of it. He also loves hanging out with friends and his new wife. As for me, I'm the 'brutal postman', so I have my day job as a mailman, and then love to hang out with my family at night. I'm involved with a couple more musical projects, so I've always got a guitar or bass in my hands. I'm also always trying out new hardware and software to record VM better everytime.
