Fretboard Frenzy ("FF"), the brainchild of Rosli Mansor, came unto the local music scene in late 2007. Rosli approached several experienced and upcoming guitarists and shared with them his vision and hopes of FF. Thereafter, at Rosli's invitation, these artists agreed to join FF.
1 March 2008 was FF's first outing (a.k.a. Guitar Day), co-presented by terrabox management (producer of Fretboard Frenzy) and SOFT.com.sg. Held at *scape Youth Centre, it was a day of workshop sessions by FF's invited musicians: Paul Danial, Simon Yong, Brandon Gan, Simon Lai and Rosli Mansor. The audience walked away wanting more after the session and the second Guitar Day was held on 3 May 2008.
The second event saw people packing *scape Youth Centre to the brim as guitar maestros Malik, Addy Rasidi and Rosli entertained with their insightful teaching and experiences and a musician.
After the event, bassist Wendy Phua was invited to join FF. Wendy is one of the few female bassists in Singapore and she released her instrumental EP, Between Here And Then, early 2008.
FF is not just a platform for guitarists to showcase their passion, expertise and original works on the guitar. As the name suggests, anyone who has a passion for any instrument with a fretboard (e.g. bass) and with their original instrumental compositions are welcome to join FF.
There are constant challenges that FF faces despite having a good kick off this year. One of FF's main objectives have always been encouraging local artists, especially the invited FF artists, to produce their own original instrumental works and not just simply ride on FF's platform. The local music scene is growing and this year presents a good opportunity to introduce the instrumental genre to local audiences.
Though FF started out as a workshop platform, Rosli and terrabox management are on the constant lookout for a suitable performing venue for the FF's invited artists to showcase their instrumental works. And they are still awaiting for a positive response.
There will be more exciting things and challenges to come for FF in 2008 and beyond.
