Current mood:disgusted
I'm disturbed greatly by the thinly veiled homophobic tone of this piece. It is as ignorant to suggest that all civil partnerships are open relationship as it would be to suggest all heterosexual couples are monogamous. A Civil Partnership is the legal recognition of two consenting adults and affords the same civil rights as a 'traditional' marriage. It has nothing to do with what goes on in the bedroom.

Read the article in question here and please register and voice your concern if you agree the article uses hate language and is homphobic.
You can email complaints@pcc.or.uk or visit www.pcc.org.uk
The article breaches 1, 3, 5 and 12 of the code of practices.

I agree Darren, the article is totally prejudice. It is assuming that only gay couples could stray. Lots of straight people stray too. Everybody, gay or straight can cheat. The writer is obviously archaic in his thinking.

I completely agree, what a vile woman. And for her to express her homophobic thoughts in relation to Stephen's death when it is still so raw is incredibly insensitive. As a massive fan of Stephen's I cannot feel anything but hatred towards this woman for what she has implied, and she should let his family and friends grieve without providing her mindless comments. But this is about so much more... this is not just about her insensitive comments on Stephen's death, this is about homophobia in modern scoiety. Stephen was so corageous and came out at a time when it was still taboo for a pop star to be homosexual. He led the way for so many others, and was an inspiration. I thought times had changed, but clearly there are still many small minded people out there, one who unfortunately is allowed to voice their opinion in a national newspaper. Vile. Stephen would be horrified to hear these comments. Jan should be ashamed.

Oh wow. Did anyone else notice in the next article she goes on to write, "In fact, everyone is too old for that look, unless you happen to be Timmy the Tranny, the hat-check personage down at the My-Oh-My supper club in Brighton."? That appals me.

I noticed within the comments someone talkng about "cheating" which I don't think is accurate. Many couples open their relationship. This is not the same as an affair unbeknownst to one partner.

Thanks for voicing your concern (and rightly so) once again Darren.

This "reporter" or whatever you want to call "her" is disgusting. She is sick. This article was distasteful, degradeful, hurtful, etc. Everyone & I mean EVERYONE should have equal rights regardless! It's nobody's business what goes on in anyone's bedroom, regardless of who you are..celebrity or not. So what does it matter if you are homosexual or heterosexual?? I totally support Civil Partnerships 1000%...I only hope that someday very soon people that are in CP's are finally afforded ALL the SAME RIGHTS as heterosexual couples. People like this stupid b**ch, are the ones that make it hard on those in CP's with their comments and actions. ..
And not only "gays cheat"....if only that were true....Everyone does...regardless.
Thanks for your tweet Darren.

You're kidding, right?  In the U.S. we used normal people to battle injustice towards women, African Americans, etc.  The U.S. is now working on gay rights.  It is not the governments or higher powers that make change, it is the little people who yell in one BIG voice :)

..I agree whole heartedly, however as civil partnerships are relatively new and still not accepted in some 'backward' countries, it is going to take a while till we are rid of this slanderous type of article- I mean it's not as if gay people just treat their civil partnerships with a pinch of salt and go around f*cking everyone. That is so small-minded and disgusting. It's scary that there are still some out there with this kind of narrow-minded mentality about people.

I also saw a link for an article today about an interracial couple being denied a marriage license in Louisiana. I don't know where this world is going but I don't like it.

Writing as she does suggest not only homophobic way, but because she is unintelligent and too ignorant of many things Shame! for such. Everyone has a right to live their lives as they want, I think if it does not harm others and themselves. Good that you noted, this article has also David Tennant made also. Love and tenderness are not dead, but of creating a lot of positive forces is good.

..This article is downright VILE. I think she suffers from a severe case of homophobia coupled with a complete lack of feeling for Stephens' partner, family and friends.  Yes they were married as far as I am concerned, what went on in their relationship was their business and as far as I know they were happy. Dear lord look around and see all of the heterosexual couples who date others and that also is their business. I have been reading alot of comments written on the Boyzone site and I really didnot know how hateful and cruel human beings can be...
What is wrong with us as a society that we cannot accept people as they are, for their talent, their love, and for the pure fact that we are all brothers and sisters regardless of race, religion or lack off, sexual orientation.

..I don't think that is exactly what was meant. I think the writer was trying to infer that Homosexual and Hetrosexual Marriages are not different. We all know that the divorce rate is really high for 'traditional' marriage and this writer was trying to infer that civil unions are not perfect either.
I do agree this could have been written much better, but I would not go as far as to say it was vile. This article is nothing compared to what gets printed in the american press, which really is vile and distasteful.

The whole idea of having rigid constraints on the sex of your partner is disgusting. Surely you fall in love or have relationships with people who you are attracted to and that are on your wave-length, whether they are male or female. The daily mail (and sorry if i stereotype - its not normally me...but...) is for people who are not pragmatic in todays environment, they would rather have an opinion shoved onto them, rather than having the facts and letting the readers make their own mind up. ..
....The fact that the journalist makes a statement about what happened with Gatley et al is abhorrent, suggesting that the only reason that they bought the third person home was, as she put it, 'sleazy'... so what if they did?... people are free to make their own choices in life! I have my partner over sometimes with his friend....OBVIOUSLY SLEAZY!!... i hate that people are pigeon holed into certain ways. People are entitled to their own life, which ever way they choose! the fact that the three went back to Gatelys house is something that the journalist wouldn't bat an eyelid if the couple were hetrosexual, so why the big deal if they have different sexual persuasions the that of the writer?... she should not have made judgements of things that she knows nothing about. However, saying that, she writes for the daily mail, and unfortunately there are people out there who believe and live by that paper... nature of the beast...although i hate to say it...
....I truly believe that people should make up their own mind, and with such a one sided and blatant homophobic peice like this, it will only increase the closed mindedness of the mails reader....grrrrr!....rant over!....

grrrrrrrrr Im so angry with her and her comments ..... seems like all she did was to used Stephens death for a story to have a go and Gays and Civil Partnerships...... and what makes it worse it all so appears that she has quoted a lot of men, but not one gay female partnership!!!!!!!

I can't believe the woman even said and I quote "Whatever the cause of death is, it is not, by any yardstick, a natural one. Let us be absolutely clear about this. All that has been established so far is that Stephen Gately was not murdered." that Stephens death was not a natural one..... it would appear that not only does she right crap, but she also did the post mortem, but did the foresic's in the hotel room! Its bad enough for the family to have deal with his death let alone reading the crap this woman has spouted out in the newspaper. She should hung strung and quatered for her comments!

This is so weird because in my English class recently we had to give a presentation on an issue we either agree or disagree with. And a group did 'Homohobia' as their issue. The idea was they give their view and answer questions about it form the rest of the class. It turned into a hate war, with, i'd say, most of the class shouting at one another saying it was 'unnatural' and 'wrong' or 'not normal' to be gay. It was shocking to see how homophobic these people were. Yet if it were racisms, they'd never even dream of saying anything like that.
It really depressed me.

Based on some of the comments here, I'm not sure I even want to read it. I know it'll just make me very angry. Whoever wrote the article should learn to respect other people's choices. If everyone complains about this columist to the Daily Mail, maybe they will give her a warning, or take her job. A bit extreme, but who is she to judge? I hate injustice & people disrespecting others.

Hi Darren! You are so right. A young man tragically died and all Jan Moir can do ist to defame gay people and partnerships. Gay people and heterosexual people have no different ways of live. And why should they? We are all human beings. We all try to fulfill our wishes and dreams also in private life as in our jobs. And everyone has the right of a ..private.. life without people outside judging it. Perhaps the article has one good: We discuss the problem and make people sensible about it. And so much criticism cannot remain unheard. R.I.P Stephen!

I'm encouraging everyone to please retweet, bulletin, blog and show this in status updates.  This blatantly homophobic and hate inducing piece is unacceptable. I for one have already submitted a complaint to the Press Complaints Commission about it and would encourage everyone else to do the same.

To insinuate that their private life was deviant because they are a gay couple in a civil ceremony is a disgrace. They behaved no differently to many other heterosexual married couples. Everyone has different preferences, sexuality has nothing to do with the choices couples make in their private lives. Threesomes, partner swapping, group sex and monogamy are all things heterosexual people and gay people participate in.

I thought exactly the same thing when I read this article this morning - offensive, unnecessary and totally inappropiate. Gotta say I've never been keen on Moir as a journalist, but this takes the piss.
I strongly believe that gay marriage is no different to a hetrosexual marriage and it annoys me more than words can express that people like Moir feel they have a right to be disrespectful towards it. What the hell does it matter what freakin sex you are?! If two people love each other then that is all that counts. To suggest that gay marriage's are open marriages is downright rude and incredibly offensive. You are spot on Darren, it has absolutley nothing to do with what does on in the bedroom - that is totally irrelevant.
It makes my blood boil that in a time when society is so troubled with unnecessary war, knife crime, gun crime and general hate towards each other as human beings that we can't celebrate two people being in love. What sex a person is is totally irrelevant and should not matter at all.

Reading articles like Moir's makes me ashamed to be a human being. It really does make me sad.

Amazing.  They want to say that same-sex couples live in open relationships, and that they basically are incapable of staying true to one person, and that a typical night out includes going to the bar or club and finding a third for the bedroom...

Disgusting.

I'm sure there are open same-sex relationships, but there are likely far more opposite-sex couples doing the same thing, and they're doing so within the bonds of legal marriage - something most of us in same-sex couples don't get the luxury of, when it should be a right.

This article really hacks me off...  There's no reason for it, and absolutely no need for the hate-mongering tone used throughout.  >:O

Ah, the Daily Mail, is there anyone they don't hate? I think what bothered me most about the article was actually summed up by a friend recently when she said that the LGBT community is so often linked up with 'kinky' practices. It almost seems to be this expectation that gay=sexually deviant and sexually deviant=atleast a bit gay. It baffles me really. Marriage is about love, and bedroom antics are not the be all and end all of what love is about.

It is a shame when people think and feel this way. Like I said, it's sad and can be sickening how even in this day and age people aren't always open minded. There's more opened mindedness than there was years ago but there's still closed mindedness out there. I've heard you can't help who you fall in love with. I agree with it more and more. I agree with it too that one is born with their orientation. It is a biological  or physiologica thing sort of thing isn't it? I don't think it matters at all who you are in love with; equals right straight, homosexual, gay, or bi sexual. I don't see who you're in love with, have an attraction to or your orientation has to do with your rights. Really, why should it? That's what I don't get because I don't think it should determine what rights you have. Don't think it should be their business either, whoever determines what rights people have. Is it not a preference? That's just how I feel.
