Femi and Yeni believe the shut down is in retaliation for criticism Femi has launched, in posters all over Lagos, calling for the return of electricity in his impoverished neighborhood and inciting his neighbors to revolt against the ever-deteriorating conditions prevalent in their increasingly precarious lives.

Some details via Agence France Press:

LAGOS (AFP) — Authorities in Nigeria have shut the new Africa Shrine, a music venue built and owned by Femi Kuti, a son of the Afro-beat legend Fela Kuti, the family said Thursday.

A letter from Lagos authorities dated Monday, accused the Shrine of breaching the state's environmental laws citing "noise nuisance, illegal street trading, indiscriminate parking, blocking of access roads and obstruction of traffic."

Yeni Kuti, a dancer and the eldest child of Fela Kuti, who co-manages the club with Femi, said the state government gave the Kuti family 48 hours "to abate the nuisance and restore the land to a conducive environment" but closed the club less than 24 hours after the delivery of the letter.

"I'm shocked, indignant. They dropped the note on Monday evening and the next day at 9:00 am they had closed the place," she told AFP.

The government is evil throught and through. But soon they will be gone from around us and Jah people will be free to live and love and enjoy good music such as yours. You are blessed by Jah that is why the evil government disciples are wanting to silence you. Maybe you can get enough signatures to overturn it.

This is really ridiculous!  I am so sorry that your family and staff are being harassed by a the corrupt law enforcement of Nigeria!  I pray that they will restore what is rightfully yours to you and the people of Nigeria.  Requesting the restoration of electricity in an already impoverished neighborhood is a basic human right, NOT a luxury in this day and age.  I am outraged this "Punk-ish" display of power!

KEEP FIGHTIN' FEMI AND YENI! They've been wanting to do this for a long time now. They feel they've gotten their chance. Show them it won't be long before the Shrine is back and stronger then ever!

If you need a contingent from the States to come through, we will be on the first plane to Lagos! You just tell us WHEN! Love y'all! Keep us posted!
