ABC cancels 'Life on Mars'
http://www.variety.com/article/VR1118000748.html?categoryid=14&cs= 1

There won't be "Life on Mars" much longer.
ABC has decided to end the show after a single year - but in an unusual move, will keep "Mars" on the air through the end of its full run.

That will give the series a rare opportunity to sign off with a proper finale, wrapping up the series' core mystery.

Network insiders said they were fans of the show, and pleased with its creative chops - but that the ratings ultimately didn't warrant a second season. The most recent seg of "Mars" averaged just a 2.0 rating and 5 share among adults 18-49, as well as 5.5 million viewers.

Five more episodes of "Mars" remain, out of the series' 17-episode order. As previously announced, "Mars'" Wednesday 10 p.m. slot will make way for newcomer "The Unusuals" in April.

Based on the BBC series of the same name, "Life on Mars" centers on a cop who suddenly, mysteriously finds himself transported back to the 1970s, where the rules are dramatically different. 20th Century Fox TV and ABC Studios produce.

Showrunners Josh Appelbaum, Andre Nemec and Scott Rosenberg aren't traveling far: They have the Alphabet pilot "Happy Town" in the works.

"Mars" stars Jason O'Mara, Gretchen Mol, Harvey Keitel, Michael Imperioli and Jonathan Murphy.

Originally developed and shot in 2007 under David E. Kelley, "Mars" was re-developed and re-shot after Kelley departed. Under the new showrunners, just O'Mara was kept from the original cast; the show was also retooled to better reflect the U.K. original.

Beyond Appelbaum, Nemec and Rosenberg, exec producers include Stephen Garrett and Jane Featherstone. Kudos Film & TV, which originated the show in the U.K., is also a producer.

That's terrible news. I'm really very disappointed to hear that. LoM was definitely my favorite new show this season and I was really hoping that y'all would get picked back up for a second season.

Just out of curiosity, Jonathan, can you tell us how many episodes are left to be filmed? Just wondering how much time and how much room y'all will have to wrap things up.

Thanks Jonathan. I am really sorry to see the show go, but I am looking forward to seeing how it all gets wrapped up. I was talking to my mom about it who also watches it and we both agreed that the two things that we want to see most was for them to wrap everything up good and to have Sam & Annie get together. It sounds like from what you said the first will happen and hopefully the last will as well. I watched October Road (looking forward to that second season DVD ... especially so that we can find out what happened) and look forward to seeing you (as well as Jason, Gretchen, Michael & Harvey) around on another show.

That's some sad news. "Life on Mars" was one of my favorite shows this season and was the only show I watched on ABC. ABC doesn't show any respect for its scripted shows these days as it did during the mid 1970's to early 1980's.

Hey, hey Paula

So sorry to hear that ABC did this. Apparently they don't know quality when they have it in front of them. I understand the Rating/Share issues, but still a quality show and cast. You will be missed. Let us know whats in store for you next. Wishing you all the best.

That's a shame. But at least they'll have a chance to give the audience some closure, something "Pushing Daisies" fans like myself weren't so lucky to get (they haven't even aired the few remaining eps yet!). "Day Break" was another interesting, high concept ABC cop that lasted only a season, but since there was a final episode, it made for a really nice DVD set. I could see the same for "Life on Mars" perhaps.

Sorry to see that this ver cool and inventive show will be taken off of the air so soon.
When will the DVD of the series be available? Will it be the complete series or season 1 and 2?

I speak for two people when I say that disappointment can't begin to convey how we feel about this news. We all know the thrill we feel each week when we can finally sit down to watch something we deeply like -- especially when it's become so rare. To have that feeling (everything from the anticipation to the actual arrival) ripped away is like taking an emotional stomping.

And Jon, you know about my criticisms about some of the historical inaccuracies (well, one in particular) but even as important an issue to me that it was I could stomach it enough because of the general enjoyment I got out of the show.

Sorry for YOUR "loss" and best wishes for new and better things.
Speaking of which (and the previous), remember what you promised ;-)
