Dear Friends of Deep Listening:
I am pleased to be able to celebrate the New Year with you as Deep Listening Institute moves forward with an ear to the future of listening.
Below you will get a glimpse of some of the concepts, events and products DLI will create with the assistance of our very involved community of Listeners throughout 2007.
* More high caliber concerts by members of the Deep Listening community and their friends.
* More exciting collaborations between musicians in different cities and countries in real time, as we continue to pioneer technically advanced co-located concerts.
* Deep Listening Programs for Children and special programs and musical tools for Physically Challenged Children
* A new theater work evolving –supporting our mission to support the creation of new work: MutaMYTHeatre's nohtopera "Three Songs in Search of a Voice" by Al Margolis and Lisa Barnard is a glimpse into the landscape of a dreaming mind that incorporates live and prerecorded sound, video, voice and movement.
* A new musical work by Pauline Oliveros at Lincoln Center Out of Doors.
* Two DVDS will be issued on our new imprint, "Tintinnabulate":
Njinga the Queen King; The Return of a Warrior - written and directed by Ione, original music and sound design by Pauline Oliveros. The epic work that Pauline and I created which premiered at BAM's next wave festival in 1993 and saw performances over the ensuing 8 years is finally beginning a new digital life.
IO and HER and the Trouble with Him; A Dance Opera in Primeval Time; written and directed by Ione with Music and Sound Design by Pauline Oliveros and Choreography by Joanna Haigood. This DVD will feature the April 2001 performance at University of Wisconsin at Madison's Union Theater.
More good news about IO - In April of 2006, scenes from the the opera were presented at Zaccho Dance Theater in San Francisco and we are looking toward another performance of the newly visioned work in 2007.
* A Deep Listening Convergence - the first unique gathering of Deep Listening Certificate Holders will take place in June 2007 at the elegant and comfortable Lifebridge Sanctuary. The Sanctuary is a 12,000 square foot hand crafted, green facility on 95 acres of forest and spectacular open space on the Northern crest of the Shawangunk Ridge. DL Convergence is supported by the New York State Music Fund.
* Our 17th Annual Deep Listening Retreat (also at LifeBridge Sanctuary) takes place July 29 to August 4. Due to many requests we have added an extra day to the DL Retreat.
* March is the month for Deep Listening Institute's Women & Identity Festival 2007. I have curated this Festival since 1999 and look forward to continuing the tradition this year.
Women and Identity is a festival dedicated to the concept of women artists creating a vibrant and supportive community with each other. The festival offers women in varying fields of the arts (filmmakers, painters, sculptors, musicians, composers, actors, playwrights, dancers and performance artists) an opportunity to view and discuss their work in an informal setting and to explore what it means to be a woman artist working today. During the Festival, women have covered a number of topics, ranging personal concerns to investigations of the climate at large for women in the arts.
* Live Letters Aloud, a series of performances curated by Mikhail Horowitz featuring outstanding collaborations between Hudson Valley poets and musicians and their guests.
More details on all of these events will be available in our Spring Newsletter and on our website.
I look forward to your being a part of our work and play in the new year and I am wishing you a year of deep creativity and engaged listening.
Sincerely, IONE Artistic Director
