Good day Lads featuring Girls. TOMORROW (that's Friday April 17th) we have this little feast of excellence:
DAS BOTON is the band name for the new musics flowing from the excellent head of one BILLY DOLAN. Mr Dolan is best known for being the force behind the awesome 5IVE STYLE alongside Jeremy Jacobsen (who went on to be known as The Lonesome Organist), Johnny Herndon (of Tortoise) and Leroy Bach (of Wilco). 5ive Style's irresistable grooves stemmed straight from the dry and extremely funky guitar styles of Dolan which owe as much to D.Boon's mashing of styles in the Minutemen as they do to The Meters' economical grooves. Good shit in other words. You may also know him from his playing in the equally fine HEROIC DOSES or EUPHONE. Talking of Euphone, Billy is celebrating the release of his first solo album "Do-Ist" by putting together the touring band Das Boton with Euphone (and Owls, Human Bell) drummer Ryan Rapsys and bassist Karl Rupp. They are splendid party music for sure. http://www.myspace.com/billydolan1 They are joined on this tour by Leeds' premier good time band CISSY. Cissy is the brainchild of former Dragon Rapide and The Lapse drummer Matt Woodward and sees a bringing together of seemingly disparate styles into a harmonius whole. Post punk James Chance-ish grooves twat hard against pleasing and organic dance beats but always played on the very edge of their seats. Never too smooth. Always a bit grubby. http://www.myspace.com/cissysound Das Boton and Cissy will be recording songs for a split LP, to be released on the Six Gun Lover Records (http://www.sixgunlover.com / http://www.myspace.com/sixgunlover) label, based in Austin, Texas. The LP release should coincide with the tour, making it a special tour and the first release for both bands. As if that wasn't enough, we've got HUMAN HAIR opening up. Shit yes. You'll know all about these characters by now. I'm still not sure if they have 2 guitarists or 1. Or whether singer Jack is singing in English. I don't think it matters. What matters is that with guitarist Herbert touring the known universe with his other band Lovvers all the time, a Human Hair show is rarer than a Led Zep reunion these days. Herbert just got back from America so here's hoping he has a really severe fake tan and that he got his teeth cosmetically altered when he was out there leaving him looking like indie rock's own David Hasselhoff. http://www.myspace.com/humanhairband So that's that. It's taking place at THE CHAMELEON in the Market Square in NOTTINGHAM. Just stand in the square. Look for Clinton Cards. Look above it and there is the lovely Chameleon. Door are at 8.45 or so. It's £5 or £4 if you can think of an excuse for the extra quid. If you haven't seen The Locust before and are going to see Rolo Tomassi (I jest!) at the Social then that show finishes at 10 o clock giving you ample time to jog along the short distance to this show and still catch most of the action. I would imagine having a stamp from that gig allows you to pay £4 but I'm not on the door so you'll have to argue your own case there sonny. Also: don't forget that we have the following utterly amazing and unique event coming up on APRIL 29TH
MR EUGENE ROBINSON of the mighty OXBOW will be doing a presentation from his acclaimed book FIGHT at the JAM CAFE on Hockley (opposite Hockley Grill). This promises to be an amazing event. Have a read about Eugene's book and research into ass-kickery here: http://www.harpercollins.com/books/9780061189227/Fight/index.aspx As if that's not enough, author CHRIS KILLEN will be reading from his novel THE BIRD ROOM (http://www.guardian.co.uk/books/2009/jan/31/bird-room-review) and we also have JACK LANTERN of Human Hair infamy doing some spoken word to kick things off. This is the first spoken word show we've done, we like the idea of it. It's also the first time we've used the lovely Jam Cafe so come along and support it. It's worth pointing out this occurs the same night as Man Utd V Arsenal in the Champions League. That will be done by 9.30 and so we will start a little later than normal to accomodate anyone interested in both football and fighting. Thanks! Team DY
