The Sarasota Herald-Tribune reports that over 50 professional and college scouts were squeezed into an overflow crowd in Punta Gorda for a baseball showdown matching the host Charlotte Tarpons and nationally-ranked Sarasota last week. The witnessed a classic, with undefeated Charlotte (13-0) pulling out a 1-0 thriller over the Salors (12-2).
Charlotte righthander Robbie Powell (5-0) scattered eight hits, struck out nine and stranded nine Sarasota baserunners to get the pitching victory. He got a big lift from Tarpons designated hitter Matt Douglas who had the game-winning RBi single with two outs.
Charlotte's victory created movement at the top of two classifications in this week's state baseball rankings. Sarasota slipped to No. 2 in 6A behind Jupiter (14-2). Charlotte jumped from third to the top spot in the 5A poll thanks to its big victory and a 2-1 loss by previous No. 1 Tampa Plant (14-1) to another ranked team, Tampa Jesuit (12-2).
