3rd 7". "dødt batteri"
LOWCUT.DK:
This new 45 from the Aarhus boys, their 3rd, kinda takes the best of their two previous singles. The Killed By Death punk of the debut, and the more new wave/postpunkish vibe of "Ingenting Set" are infused with outstanding results. The vocals of Mads are this time lower in the mix while the dynamics of the band reaches new heights rarely heard in the Danish punk scene, hell, most bands on the international punkrock map sound inferior and weak compared to Cola Freaks. Both "Dødt Batteri" and the flip, "Nej", are amazing examples of the 5-piece's unique knack for (re)writing punkrock history while still reminding us why we love the likes of The Wipers and Jay Reatard.
DUSTEDMAGAZINE.COM:
Shaking off the ‘50s R’n’R/early Wire cross-up from their first single, here’s Denmark’s Cola Freaks again, concentrating on making instead a bigger, more useful record. “Dodt Batteri” and “Nej!” both play with crisp, spring-loaded guitars, but allows them to go slack on the latter, making for the sort of discordant interplay you’d hear on a Hot Snakes record, and the former perhaps on an old Rocket From the Crypt single. Hard to hide Reis as an influence, so these guys don’t even try. Catchy, though, and I liked the first one and this one for different reasons. 600 copies.
MAXIMUM ROCK N ROLL:
The off-kilter new wave rock 'n' roll punk of COLA FREAKS kind of caught me off guard. I've heard people singing their praises for a while now, but could not muster the interest to check them out. I am totally bummed I didn't get up on how rad they really are sooner! I really can't get enough of this dirty chorused-out ADVERTS-esque guitar tone and classic punk sound that is done well by JAY REATARD, GORILLA ANGREB, MASSHYSTERI and the like, but COLA FREAKS add a level of charm and grittiness that can only distinguish it from the pack and appeal to my need for freshness and originality. Totally recommended. (AA)
TERMINAL-BOREDOM.COM:
Dark Euro-hardcore/punk, much in the vein of the K-Town bands like Gorilla Angreb, Young Wasteners, NHFTK, etc...This was my first taste of the Cola Freaks, and I was expecting a more spazzed-up KBD-style attack, but they come off more sophisticated than that. "Dodt Batteri" reminds of Lokum a bit, with a stripped-down arrangement, eerily ringing guitars, sort of bare bones punk. More interesting than I imagined they would be. The flip ("Nej!", both tracks feature Danish lyrics), is a more assertive punker that retains some of the gloom but balances it with an upbeat chorus. Sharply recorded and well played, I was expecting more slop, but I'm not disappointed at all by the lack of shit-fi ethos here. Well executed, as most of the stuff from this scene tends to be. Scum stats: 600 copies. (RK)
RAZORCAKE:
Wow! What the fuck? This is not what I thought this band sounded like. This is such a weird and pleasurable blend of raw Swedish assault hardcore and delicious Danish pop. It seems like there’s so much deconstruction going on here; I’m not even sure if this fits into a genre of music. Taking the most basic elements of punk, pop, and garage and mutilating them to pieces until it sounds like a band that formed in the basement of a mental institution. For fans of both Instäng and Gorilla Angreb; plus the rest of those great European bands, except I don’t feel like anyone in the Cola Freaks spends much time in the morning deciding which color beret they should wear. –Daryl Gussin
SUBURBAN VOICE BLOG:
Two jittery gems by the Danish Freaks. Enough rock-crit speak. The Cola Freaks’ first EP (which is all I’d heard up to this point) had a jabbing, stripped down punk sound and it’s maintained here while also adding some haunting melody to the mix. “Dødt Batteri” has a pronounced nervousness, especially vocally. Flip it over and there’s a slightly more straight-forward riff but the tension still bubbles. Definitely a step up for these guys. –Al Quint
First EP:Equalizing Distort
Cola Freaks ep The COLA FREAKS are one of the latest garage inspired punk bands to come from Denmark. They were just in North America a few months back and even got close to playing here. The band has a tough sound to their rather wimpy version of punk. What I mean by that is that garage is usually distinguished by the absence of distortion and a blown out guitar. Well the COLA FREAKS chose to play more acoustically through their electric guitars which I think is referred to as lo fi. But it also means that you can hear what the band is playing which means that the rely more on rhythm and syncopation. They remind me of GANG OF FOUR in that respect. But they also remind me of DEAN DIRG with the slight tough sound that they have to their garage punk. Think GANG OF FOUR meets DEAN DIRG in a band more concerned with writing a catchy song. Lowcut Cola Freaks 7" (Hjernespind) WOW! Probably the strongest debut single ever released by a Danish punk band! Four short tracks of pure brilliant KBD/early Wipers punk sung in Danish. It's simple and catchy music which should appeal to a lotta people both into new and vintage punkrock, although the songs are vastly rougher and faster live. The name is from an old song by Lost Kids, one of the earliest Danish punk acts, and Cola Freaks isn't that far from their sound. The band features members of the sadly defunct Tæve, Rotter, Snöwball, Don & The Johns and other Aarhus bands. In August and September the boys are on a huge US tour through 39 states (!) which is pretty unheard of for a Danish underground act barely 8 months old! http://www.myspace.com/colafreaks http://www.kicknpunch.com/Sider/Hjernespind-diskografi.htm If you dig: KBD punk, Wipers, Gorilla Angreb -5 barber blade- Jens MMR
