the internet is funny.  i avoided all of it for a long time because it seemed gross and lame.  i mean, i fought with my label not to have a myspace page at all in the beginning because, well, because i'm old and weird and buy vinyl records and do things like write letters, and it all seemed too strange.  so they made one anyway, and i avoided it.

when i came back from the last tour, i found something insane like 13,000 messages in the lcd inbox (after wrangling the access passwords and crap from capitol) and felt pretty badly that there was so much personal mail from people that went totally unanswered, then set out to answer as much of it as i could without giving up my life completely, and did.

anyway, i've noticed lately that almost all my myspace messages come from other things promoting themselves, and less and less from people reaching out, so it's less interesting, for sure.  but then i found out that the label had started a facebook (and, of all things, "twitter") account "on my behalf", and i grabbed the access to them, as well.  i mean, if people are going to think stuff is coming from you, then it might as well be coming from you, you know?  so there.

this is still the better place to write these longer things, for sure, but i noticed that the facebook page is more idiotic and hilarious.  twitter...  well, i don't quite get it.

anyway, i'm making a record, as previously blathered about, and this means that my horrible, useless website is getting redone by my friend sonya.  i mean, it sucks, which was my choice.  i was like "can this look more horrible?"  i wish i was kidding, but i happen to like crap.  i just do.  but she's promised to work with me to make sure it's still unwieldy and awkward, which is good preparation for everything else lcdish, and i promise to be less grumpy about things actually being “useful”.  it’s just that things that are too “useful”...  well, i don’t entirely trust them.  i kind of like useless things.  for instance—and this is a pretty facile and simplified metaphor here—art is useless, and nazis made lots of useful things.  i like dumb meandering things that make me happy and confused, and don’t particularly like “effective marketing tools designed for maximum accurate data capture” blah blah blah.  it all sounds so sad and functional.  i don’t like the idea of people sitting in a room talking about the best way to word things to get the right reaction from a base of “users” etc.  i don’t like thinking that those people used to love to do something, or wanted to be something, and would up measuring the best way to manipulate other people.  i honestly don’t judge them, but i feel weird, and sort of sad—not FOR them, in a pitying way, as i have no idea how they fell, for fuck’s sake, and i’m a ridiculous person by the measure of a pretty deep cut of the population—but ABOUT them.

anyway, marcus (shit robot), my friend and dfa artist, is coming over to have an espresso and a shot of tequila (not mixed) before he goes to santos to dj with the holy ghost guys.  marcus has a kid, which i think is totally amazing.  he’s a great dj and here to get his album done with me.  lives in germany now, so just visiting.  and here, on this weird thing, i can just say “marcus is coming over for an espresso” and it goes from simple, personal fact that i might tell nick from holy ghost in a text (in fact, just did) to a weird other-meaning thing that exists here...  or everywhere.  i’m not so used to this personal as media shit.  but, on the other hand, what’s the difference really between this and a song about something personal?

oh, right.  you can’t sing a blog.

Steely Dan Hicks and His Hott Lix

Right on man, I know what you mean, all this incessant yammering about bs constantly has to have some unintended effect on how we relate to each other as human beings, it's pretty concerning.

But on the other hand pandora's box has been opened and there's really no turning back.  Like it or not the internet, or whatever it morphs into, will be one of the primary ways in which we communicate from here on out.

Anyway I'm excited to hear the new album, best of luck finishing it up!

i get it, you're upset by our lives that are speeding up - especially on the internet. don't fall behind, james.
oh, and a handful of artists like you are the reason why i'm still keeping my damn myspace account.
and this is you on twitter: http://twitter.com/lcdsoundsystem ?
hope so. i always like to hear from you, james, doesn't matter if it's beats, melodies, your voice or stupid non-existent words on the internet.

messages to promote yrself is crap, but as far as social media site for music it's hard to beat myspace. Its not the coolest or the newest, but Facebook should never have added "band pages" and I still don't see the point of Twitter. easy

you have a nice way to both summarize (what it could be) long explanations and develop (what it could be) short but interesting subjects. Guess that's why I like your posts. ..(once again, I'm not sure I made myself clear here, but...)....
....Great to see you took over that facebook account, it was pointless without you (or anyone directly involved with LCD) managing. FB is quite silly, but i must admit I have some fun over there.......
....what else to say? looking forward for the new album, of course! ......

it's all very complicated.  this kid, cody  brown, called myspace a "cyber ghetto".  but, here's something cool.  people listen to and love your music and through technology you have a way to make a connection with them, even if it's fleeting and ephemeral and gone in an instant and all of that.  and things get heard and listened to, even if it's not in the ways that they used to be...
....twitter is not so hard.  it's a way to tell people stuff that might not take a long thing.  it's like fyi and less intrusive.....
....and lastly, going through some personal life stuff, and "someone great" is my anthem these days.  thanks, man.  'sound of silver' will live forever.  it's fucking brilliant.  ..

You rule. I'm old too, and I live in Germany (originally from Chicago), and I, too, am having my first kid (a boy, Nic, due any day now). I'm commenting because you touched my life a while back when I first heard Disco Infiltrator on WZRD radio in Chicago on my way to see Electric Six (who have a great sense of humor and irony), and I, too, was distrustful of the internet, and, also, still wrote letters and hung out with humans in meat space. And I agree with, oh, let's say everything in this post, just to make it easy. Keep doing this, and help me pick an appropriate lcd soundsystem song for an infant to listen to. Thanks for existing.

State of Mind

Great post!
I'm glad I'm not the only one who is put off by the whole "tricking people into buying stuff" mode of thinking (I sometimes think it's because I never went to business school).
That said, I still use MySpace and Facebook and Twitter to stay in touch with fans - and I'm glad you do as well - because it can be great fun to hear from people whose work you like.
But to use those supposedly "friendly" media for aggressive promotion just seems, well... ill-advised.

i hear you--but also, even if you DID go to business school...  it just seems like bad business.  i mean, you'll eventually put people off.  not to mention--i think the people who like my band are pretty different to passive "consumers" who this stuff it super effective with.  that said, with labels, radio, mtv being less and less hospitable for bands like ours, i'm trying to find a way to reach people who would like us and not make it "difficult" to find our record.  because there is a huge difference between my youth and now--when i was a kid, a record being hard to find meant you might spend 5 years looking, and living temporarily with a cassette.  whereas now, something hard to find is just downloaded with no artwork in a crappy mp3 format.  which i totally understand--people want music when they hear about it.  not years later.  so i need to find a way to make that all more streamlined.  i'm making the dfa webstore better, with downloads (high res) and physical stuff like vinyl, too.  i like the idea of free DL's with purchase of vinyl.

I always wondered who was in control of musicians' myspaces. I've sent messages to a few of my favourite artists hoping they'd respond, but most likely it's not them. You've given me hope, and I can't want for the new material.

So sorry that you feel so sad about those digital marketing drones (who help to sell your music), yes they all maybe wanted to be something but we can't all be seminal disco-punks can we James? Most people have to live in the real world with jobs and stuff. Get off your high horse and get back to finishing that record.

Very strange thing indeed, this internet business.  I've always wondered what it would be like to be on the other side of the artist/fan dynamic, and your thoughts on the matter are pretty great to behold!  I mean, I'm just a guy who really loves your music, and I still get to access the thoughts you choose to share with us, and not through some interviewer's filter.  But it's artists like you (with these blogs and such) and Annie who make this an incredibly exciting time to be a music fan.  This is going to sound like mad fanboy gushing, and maybe it is, but if only we could balance the ledger and give you the amount of joy that you give us as fans...

I have spent time (a lot of it) sitting in rooms, with a hive mind, deconstructing and reconstructing combinations of words in an attempt to find the right mix to get people to buy whatever it is we are selling (in this case natural health and holistic nutrition distance education...yeah, imagine those meetings)., and nothing makes me feel dirtier at the end fo the day than knowing that I just took part in a grand scheme to convince people to buy something they may not want or be able to afford. Granted, education is a bit diff and taking some responsibility for your own health is a righteous thing...but still...it's like that line from ..Say Anything..:

"I don't want to sell anything, buy anything, or process anything as a career. I don't want to sell anything bought or processed, or buy anything sold or processed, or process anything sold, bought, or processed, or repair anything sold, bought, or processed. You know, as a career, I don't want to do that."

Blargh.

Anyway, here is a thought that will let you touch two worlds at once -- use the share button on your MySpace blogs to publish to facebook, that way you are reaching both audiences with less effort.

You rock my world...

And you apparently rocked teh new 90210's world too...caught "Daft Punk is playing at my house" on telly the other night and had to stop to see who was using it.

Happy Day :)

You are a peach :) You did not make me feel bad about what I do. I was just "relating" to you, as the kids call it.

OK, once you write your blog, proof it, and publish it, go to the published instance of the blog, scroll to the bottom of your scribblings -- right before comments begin -- and look for a white button, about an inch long and a half inch high. It should say "Share" on it, and when you click on it you can decide where you want to send the blog -- facebook, digg, delicious, google, etc. -- in fact you may only have to mouse over and not actually click. Anyway, just choose facebook, click, and follow through -- easy peasy. Your blog will populate your facebook stream with a teaser paragraph and a quick link that lets readers on facebook click directly here...and you never even had to go to facebook! Voila!

I'll look for your successful posting on facebook :)

Happy Saturdaying.
