I'LL never budge from the belief that Alan Smith should not have moved from Leeds United to Old Trafford.
But it always has been obvious that the Manchester United striker is one of the most likeable, honest and down-to-earth professionals in the game.
And after his long struggle to recover from injury, it was impossible not to feel a thrill of delight for him when he returned to the limelight in style against Roma last week.
He showed he still deserves his place among the elite with his performance against the Italians and again against Watford in Saturday's FA Cup semi-final.
He's the kind of player whose unflagging spirit will be invaluable to United as they head towards the climax of the season.
For his attitude and his sheer bloody-mindedness, I hope a season that once seemed to hold only frustration yields everything he dreamed of.
