Hello everyone, this is Logan's younger sister, Emily. It's apparent that people have heard what happened to Logan, but we (his family) figured one of us should make an official announcement to you. Logan passed away peacefully yesterday afternoon. We made sure he knew how much he was loved before he went.

Not long ago, Logan told us that one of the most important things to him was playing his music for people. I'm pretty sure that right now he would thank you for being such an amazing audience. We are going to do our best to make sure his music continues to be available to everyone. Very Tiny Songs will be out soon, for which we are all extremely grateful. Grateful to have one last amazing work from the mind of Logan Whitehurst. Logan was, for many of us, the most unique and talented person we've ever known. Through his music and with your help, we will keep the memory of Logan alive. Thank you for all your support and kind words.

To quote one of his songs,

"As I go to heaven in the back of my Luv-Machine, I can hear them say as I fly away, 'LIFE IS PEACHES AND CREAM'."

What's so important 'bout peaches and cream?

Wake up and start living, it's a beautiful dream

The box spring's turning in the music machine

And your grandmother's run from the room

It's only a matter of twine before I

have run for the exit too

Thanks for the words, Emily, and my condolences to you and your family. Your brother and all the things he accomplished will be a wonderful memory for a lot of people.

I had the honor of meeting Logan on a couple of occasions, and having him address me as 'friend'.  I say that is an honor, because he was a shining soul.

I saw him (and the snowman) in concert in Los Gatos one evening, "dragged" there by my teenaged daughters.  (I am a middle aged woman).  I loved his music, and between sets we discussed his love of science songs, his mother's career as a teacher (and my career as well), and many other things.

Later, after his illness was diagnosed, my younger daughter and I made the drive to Los Banos to take Logan to lunch and deliver some gifts to him.  (My daughters had made a noodle-art 'Happy Noodle VS Sad Noodle', and I brought him a gen-u-wine Luchador mask from Tijuana).

We remained in email contact until the final phase of his illness.  My heart aches, for Emily and her family (they are wonderful people)....and all of us.

Rest Well, Logan.

With Luchador Hugs,

Nora

I've been a Tsunami Bomb fan for years. I only wish I'd known before last year that Emily was not the only talent to come from the Whitehurst family. Logan's music is amazing. My thoughts are with you all.

I was lucky enough to discover Logan's music back in the late 90s when he was the original mp3.com superstar.  We struck up a sort of online musical correspondence, and one day in the mail I received a CD from him - it was an advance copy of a song called "What I Did To The Cat" (great song!), along with a cover of one of my tunes (which was a wonderful surprise) and the request to come out to Michigan and play a few shows.

Logan came out to East Lansing and we hung out and played music for a week.  It was fun.  We went down in the basement and played TMBG covers and then in a weird twist of events he chauffered my sister and her new husband from their wedding to their honeymoon suite.  I had that car up until about 3 months ago, the "Just Married" strings were still hanging from the license plate when I sold it.

Favorite Logan memories:
-singing along in the car and finding out that you can add two more parts to "Radio Radio" and make it sound like a Queen song.
-watching my sister's wedding reception video and finding out that Logan had eaten a piece of cake in slow motion in front of the camera (when we fast forwarded the tape everybody else was zooming around and he was just eating a piece of cake like normal).
-seeing Logan play at Flint Local 432, and watching the too-cool-for-anything punk rock kids run outside during his set and then come back 30 seconds later with all their friends so that they could see him...  when Logan played "The Junior Science Club Theme" the chorus came up and he started wailing on the air guitar and the whole place went crazy.

My head is sort of spun around by the news.  As sad as I am about it, as with everything Logan-related I can't help but stand in awe of him... his life was way, way too short but with the time he had he accomplished amazing things.

Last night I was thinking about all this and I put on "Lizard and Fish" and started giggling all over again.

Thanks Logan.  Your music is awesome.

I'm very sorry to hear about Logan's passing.  My own father died of brain cancer at an early age, but not this early.  My heart is really out there for the battle he fought, and the battle his family fought.  Logan will live forever, of course.  I'm looking forward to hearing "Very Tiny Songs".  Thank you for taking care of Logan, and for taking care of his music.

I just wanted to let Logan's family and friends know that my thoughts are with them all. I hope Logan had some idea how he touched so many lives in such a positive way. Logan was not only an excellent artist and a musician, but also a wonderful person, and he will continue to live on through his art and music. I know that may sound cliche at this point, but it is very true in Logan's case. He was an incredible influence on so may people.

He will be missed greatly by many people.

Love,

Sean

I only got to know him online a few months ago.  I discovered him on Dr. Demento a few years ago, when Goodbye My 4-Track came out.  I've been hooked on his music since, and this is just so sad that he had to go so soon.  I'm confident he would have been capable of creating more great tunes had he lived longer.

Logan, I send you love and thanks.

I just now thought to check out Logan's myspace page. I've been out of the loop for a while, and this is the first I've heard of Logan's passing, and I'm beyond devastated. I'm a big fan and have been since I first heard him on Dr. Demento a few years ago. In the spring of 2003 I bought a copy of Goodbye, My 4-Track; I listened to it one weekend when I was kind of down because my wife was out of town, and it really cheered me up -- not only because of Logan's incredible sense of humor and comic timing, but also because of the wonderful talent he has. (Yes, has -- just because he isn't here now any more doesn't mean he no longer has his talent.) I've been trying to write music over the past few years, and his work has been an influence (not that mine's any good!).

My thoughts and prayers are with the Whitehursts and, of course, Vanilla.

Hi, I hope reading these blogs, help, I know it did me. (This is my first time - ever!)  I've been inspired by Logan's music!  I'm so sorry for your loss.  I just finished listening to 8 songs on a Velvet Teen Album.  All I know, is the music is beautiful.  I would have never heard this if it wasn't for my son - Matthew, also a musician, and played numerous instuments, and wrote music as well. He recorded several CD's as well.  He brought this CD over, and asked me to copy it and appreciate listening to The Velvet Teen Music.  I must say, it's the last thing he left me, because at 22 and in October, he passed after falling asleep at the wheel and hitting a large tree.  I do feel you pain.  I really did appreciate when people wrote, so I hope this is of some comfort. I read all you wrote and on his Web site, and what an awesome person he was and well loved.  I truly do believe - The GOOD DIE YOUNG.  May you have peace, and know, that he's in a better place.  I will keep you and your family in my prayers.  Sincerely, Loretta

Now to the lighter side...

Did Vanilla move to Chicago to mourn? Reason I'm asking...I take the CTA Red Line south to work every day, and I noticed on the right side that Vanilla himself was perched on a fire escape just about half a block north of Wrigley Field. I'll try to get a picture...

Really makes my day actually. An...interesting...way to keep Logan alive.

I am so sorry and shocked to hear the news.  I really thought he was going to beat the cancer.

I only had a brief email contact with Logan many years ago, complementing him on the quality of his home recordings, not to mention his fantastic songs.  "ohmygodimonfire
" will always be a personal fave, and the many incarnations of "Farkle!"  I've followed his music since mp3.com days - I will now treasure the mp3.com discs I ordered back then even more.

I know he really lived for his music, and at least I was able to repay him a little by playing "Me And The Snowman" nationally on CBC Radio last year, here in Canada.

My deepest regrets to his family, and I will do my part in keeping his music and spirit alive.

Sincerely,
Lee R.

"There's a somber congregation
Gathered all around

You're there
Among the fading crowd
I smile
And I sing aloud
Goodbye, Goodbye
Is all I have to say

It seems
As though I should have known
But then
I never would have flown
It doesn't seem too high a price to pay

Although I may be dying
My body may be lying
Taxis may be crying
In a chorus of cars
Reality receding
My heart no longer beating
My life will not be fleeting
When I'm out among the stars"

though this is late,I would like to say that Logan is a big insperation to me and may he rest in peace. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

Music is the most incredible thing anyone can leave behind. A single song can be passed on to thousands of people and played countlessly for years and years. In my life I will always play Logan Whitehurst & The Junior Science Club. In thirty years I'll probably still be playing Tiny Songs for my friends and family. I'm sorry your family had to see him suffer for so long. Those lyrics you chose are beautiful.
