I got a letter from my friend Pixie in Virginia today talking about how the state is cutting costs: letting prisoners go, cutting education and so forth. This is how I answered her-
Pixie,
It isn't just Virginia. Most of the states are cutting back. Every time people lose a job there are less taxes being collected. That means less revenue for the state to carry out their duties and they have to lay off workers so there are fewer taxes and so it spirals down the drain.
For some reason humans don't seem to understand. We need to create jobs to bring money back into the economy. With more people employed, there are more people paying taxes (thus the State can do what it is supposed to and rehire its workers) and they can spend money on things like groceries (the people laid off from there can go back to work), cars (autoworkers can get their jobs back), and houses (well, I already said it three times).
And creating jobs? That means spending money. That is, the Federal Government has to spend money. Tax cuts won't help if you are out of work. Whoopee! You have a 2% or 5% or 20% tax cut. 20% of 0 is 0. You can't cut what you don't have. ZERO is what goes to the government and they have to start laying off workers, et cetera, ad nauseum.
But I have a plan to get this stimulus package off the ground. At this point it really doesn't matter to the average Joe the Unemployed Guy what is in the plan as long as he can get a job. Unemployed Americans need to get on busses (and here's where the churches, civic organizations and private industry can help) and go sit in front of Congress. The same organizations who get them there can feed and house them. A million unemployed-man march. Oh and women, too. Bring the kids. Congress needs to really see who they are screwing.
Each time a congressman comes out they need to ask for a job.
"Have you passed the bill yet? I need a job."
"Hey, buddy, can you spare a dime? I need a job"
"What the hell are you doing out here? Get back in there, I need a job."
"My kids need food. Go sign that bill that will give me a job."
How long do you think that would last? Once the media gets on it, congress members will be holing themselves up in there rather than facing that crowd in front of a camera.
Of COURSE it's a spending bill! You have to pay people to do jobs. They aren't going to go out there in the cold and start whacking away at those bridges in order to rebuild them for free! Would you? (Well, some of them probably would just so that if they ever hired people, they would already know the job.) People are that desperate.
Let's not horse around anymore with tax cuts and special interests. Pass the damn bill. People are dying out here waiting for you guys to get off your duffs and do your job.
Hey, at least you have one.
