Hello Loves!
That's right! It's time for me to start saying farewell to Wedding Season 2009. My season doesn't officially end until the end of October (10/31/09 to be exact) with exceptions of a few weddings in November and December 2009. But the crazy weekends with two to three weddings a day in different cities like San Diego to Livermore in Northern California, or those with two weddings in different states in one day are over with starting November 2009!
Wedding Season 2009 has been good to me this year. I worked with over 75 brides (or perhaps more) and I worked with about 500 bridesmaids, moms, grandmas, sisters, aunties, and friends of the bride and/or groom this season. Lastly, I had at least 150 makeup and hair trials for engagement photo shoots. This year I noticed that quite a number of brides have had not only the trials, but booked me a second time to when they reshot their engagement pictures.
To say that I'm sad is an understatement. Weddings are my life! It has been an obsession of mine since I was 5 - just like makeup and hair! I'm one of those prissy girls who has planned my wedding and know exactly what I'm going to wear, what flowers I want, how I want my photos, what music I want to have played at the reception, etc. So to say that I have to put anything involving weddings on the side even for a brief moment is just heartbreaking! What will I do? :D
I am on the phone with one of my brides daily. Each and every single one of my brides receives my undivided attention regardless of how busy I am. We talk about the schedule for the BIG day, any questions she may have about the wedding, my professional opinion as to what hair jewelry the bride should have on her hair, any vendors I recommend, etc. If I’m not on the phone with my bride, I’m either emailing her or communicating to her wedding planner. Being a makeup artist and hair stylist is not that simple. We really get in deep with the planning. Also, there is a lot of pressure being a makeup artist AND hair stylist for a bride’s special day. I not only have to stick to a very strict schedule in which I MUST have a bride and her bridal party ready (I cannot run 10 minutes over my time frame or else she would be late to her pre-wedding photos or worst, she would be late to her own ceremony!), but I HAVE to make her feel beautiful inside and out. It’s one of those days where a person CANNOT have a BAD HAIR DAY OR even a KIND OF BAD MAKEUP DAY! Everything must be perfect! NO EXCEPTIONS! If the bride is unhappy with an artist’s work, that’s the beginning of the downfall. She will have a meltdown, she will not look happy in her photos, and feel “ugly” all day no matter how many people tell her how pretty she looks! Believe me, you don’t want to be the reason why a bride is unhappy. She will NEVER forget!
For this reason, I am the “go-to” makeup artist and hair stylist because I love the pressure. I’m like “bring it on!” Many other makeup artists refer me their clients because they get too nervous and do not have enough patience as I do. Also, being a makeup artist and hair stylist for brides is significantly different from working with a model or someone who wears makeup often. Most of the time, brides have never worn “as much makeup” (which is really not that much) and it takes a lot for a bride to adjust to her new look. They generally have a lot of questions and concerns, and are often indecisive. Models, on the other hand, understand that it takes a good amount of makeup to make them “pop” in pictures and are able to communicate exactly what they want or dislike about a certain technique in makeup!
LASTLY, IF YOU BOOK ME, KATIE B, YOU WILL GET ME!
I thought one thing that I should mention before I end this blog is that when you book me, you are booking me and I will NEVER substitute another person in my place unless I am in the hospital or something extremely tragic has happened to me (which I have not had to have anyone substitute me yet in my past 14 years…knocking on wood). I’ve seen this happen too many times. I don’t know how it exactly happens (and I think at times, the bride is aware of receiving a team member), but if you plan on booking a makeup artist and/or hair stylist, stay away from companies like “Susie Q and Team.” You will get the “team,” which can and generally is bad news. Susie Q, who likely a makeup artist, is likely the marketing person writing the blogs, editing the pictures and posting the work from other artists, booking the gigs, promoting the group, etc. I may be wrong, but this has been my HONEST observation of why “team” is not a good route to go. Most of my brides have been through word of mouth and guests from weddings. Not to toot my own horn, but I think that says something about my talent versus being a great marketer. :D I do come with a team but they are there to support me and keep me organized and on task. However, I will touch each and every single client and do almost all the work. My past clients will second that. Other main artists will have another artist who is relatively new work on bridesmaids and family members, but I am different. I work on the bride, the grandma, the auntie, the friend, the cousin, the sister, the brother’s girlfriend, etc. :D So keep that in mind!
Have a great night loves! Thank you for reading. I appreciate your support and love beyond what words can describe!
If you haven’t already done so, please vote for me for best makeup artist on myfoxla. Also, please help me spread the word about voting for me. I thank you in advance.http://lnk.ms/1PN6B
