Outlaw Funk
The atmosphere was beginning to buzz in the Old Road Tavern barn before Cowshed took to the stage; tonight they were sans drummer, but the growly Simon Garraway and the walking-bass man Chris Gorman sounded like a stripped-down Bright Eyes with gravel-like vocals and gnarly songs in a country styling reeking of the greats, a la Woodie Guthrie and Johnny Cash. Great original numbers from a very promising lyricist in a tight Americana-y ensemble. The feeling had gone from buzzing to starting to erupt now in the barn, a sense of something really happening in Chippenham growing in the amassing crowd, a bristling fervour building in anticipation of the exciting musical treats in store, the affirmation of the Scene rising within veins of all in the vicinity. Sadly The Dusty Stars too were drummerless, but they didn't let that hinder their set, they ran through their star-spangled sunshine pop tunes and got everybody's juices flowing, their songs stood out as well-crafted and long deliberated-over and their time onstage was spent meticulously well getting everyone in the mood and groove. Ready and raring then were we for the highlight of the show, the debut gig of the marvellously exhilarating Lunch Was My Idea, a collective of musical heroes from the local area; together, with the quirkiness of Ed Heard singing lead vox whilst on drums, with the percussive quality of Lindsey Miller's piano-playing, the underbelly of Pug's guitar, the driving syntax elucidated in Ash's inventive bass and guitar, and Rachel's prominent viola adding unquantifiable dimensions to the mix, Lunch Was My Idea's first live performance, which was one great melange of sound, was a spectacle never to forget. And AlexInTheVoid were on tiptop form too, sporting a new line-up, including Ed and Linz from LWMI, they blew the place apart and set it alight with their unique brand of West-Country hip-hop funk-groove soulmeister pop music. 'Chop Chop' particularly good, handsome Harvest and sexy Shireen really getting their act together, a performance to be proud of, a triumph indeed. As was the night, as was the night! The gig-goers were seriously knocked off their stools, the bands were enormously chuffed to bits, everyone had a big smile on their face, and the spirit of the room was gleefully full of merriment, and people were excited, excited tremendously about the burgeoning music scene in these parts. There's more to come, watch this space.
