JazzWinnipeg is excited to announce a special concert to honour pianistOscar Peterson and the return of the wildly popular Nu Sounds series!The Tribute to Oscar Peterson will take place Sunday, November 16th atthe Westminster United Church, and the 2008-2009 Nu-Sounds season runsfrom November until May with all performances taking place at the ParkTheatre. A Tribute To Oscar Peterson Last December, the jazz world lost one of its bona fide greats, andCanada lost a musical ambassador when Oscar Peterson passed away at theage of 82. Oscar Peterson was the most outstanding jazz pianist of hisgeneration - is remarkable dexterity and sense of swing ensured him ahuge international following. Over several decades Peterson releasedover 200 recordings, won seven Grammy Awards, and received othernumerous awards and honours. To commemorate the life and music of this beloved jazz legend, Winnipegpianist and band leader Ron Paley has assembled a trio consisting oftwo former members of Oscar Peterson's group: bassist Dave Young anddrummer Terry Clarke. Ex-Winnipegger Dave Young's long-time association with Oscar Petersonspanned several decades, beginning with a 1975 tour of Japan, the U.S.and Canada. Young also appeared on several of Peterson's recordingsover the years and this past July, Young was handed the 2008 OscarPeterson Award by the Festival International de Jazz de Montréal. Along with touring Japan and Europe with Oscar Peterson and Jim Hall,Canadian drummer Terry Clarke is well-known as a founding member of theworld acclaimed big-band, Rob McConnell's Boss Brass. Ron Paley formed the Ron Paley Big Band in 1976 after playing withBuddy Rich and Woody Herman. A Winnipeg jazz mainstay, Paley hascomposed works for big band and symphony orchestra that have beenperformed with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra. For this specialtribute, Paley has written his own arrangements of some of OscarPeterson's compositions, Hymn to Freedom, which will be performed with special guests, The Winnipeg Singers. A portion of the net proceeds from this tribute concert will be donatedto The Hnatyshyn Foundation's Oscar Peterson Grant for JazzPerformance, which was awarded this year to University of Manitobamusic student Samantha Chrol. A Tribute to Oscar Peterson will be recorded by CBC radio for broadcastin December to commemorate the one year anniversary of Peterson'spassing. Nu Sounds Series Returns The 2008-2009 Nu Sounds Series kicks off on Sunday, November 30th, witha performance by the G-Funk Ensemble. Fronted by saxophonist Ken Goldand bassist Gilles Fournier, the G-Funk Ensemble will showcase theirjazzy funk and R&B hybrid that made their night at this pastsummer's GROOVE-FM Jazz Winnipeg Festival so memorable. Nu Sounds starts off 2009 on January 11th with an appearance by theCurtis Nowosad/Keith Price Quintet. Nowosad and Price are arguably twoof the busiest young players on the local scene and the proof lies intheir group's repertoire of standards and their own jazz arrangementsof contemporary pop songs. On Sunday, February 22nd, pianist Kevin Curtis spearheads an excitingyoung group of players performing a set of brand-new compositions thatthe pianist himself describes as 'contemporary, harmonically advancedmusic incorporating a collective approach to improvisation.' A night ofchallenging, exciting music from one of the city's best up-and-comingtalents! The series continues on Sunday, March 22nd with pianist Knut Haugsoen.Normally known for his creative Scandinavian and Latin-inspiredcompositions, Haugsoen and his group will explore the American songbookand create new material based on the structure of some of these belovedsongs. The evening's repertoire will be also be peppered with recentoriginal compositions, some of which have not yet been performed live. Sunday, May 10th features a can't-miss performance by neo-soulsterAthavale. For the final concert of the 2008-2009 Nu Sounds season,Athavale will pay homage to his local influences, performing an entireset of adaptations of Winnipeg bands' songs. The Nu Sounds Series was launched in the winter of 2006 as an openinvitation to local musicians to get innovative and attempt somethingdifferent. Executive Producer of Jazz Winnipeg Paul Nolin explains thegenesis of Nu Sounds: 'We wanted to offer an outlet for musicians to really get creative:Experiment with different musical styles, work with other musiciansthey've never played with before, or introduce some brand newcompositions they've been writing.' The city's finest rose to the occasion with some truly inspiredprojects by the likes of the Michelle Gregoire Quartet, Steve Kirby'sStringy Thingy, and local electronic label Balanced Records. Winnipegaudiences responded extremely well, and the theatre was filled tocapacity for nearly every concert. 'The line-up this year really epitomizes the inventiveness ofWinnipeg's musical community,' remarks Nolin, adding 'the creativityand passion of this batch of artists made this a season a treat toprogram.' The Nu Sounds Series is generously supported by the Manitoba ArtsCouncil.
