MONDAY MAGAZINE FEATURE INTERVIEW WITH CHAMPAGNE SPARKLES:
Beyond Burlesque
By —John Threlfall
May 30 2007
They wowed us at the M Awards and have taken the stage numerous times (both home and away) during their first year of performances, but there's more to the Cheesecake Burlesque Revue than just sparkly costumes, spinning tassels and cheering crowds. With a six-member core and up to 15 performers overall, the Cheesecakes have added a bit of Mile Zero style to the west coast's neo-burlesque renaissance. And while they'll be performing a couple of times before their one-year anniversary show on July 21 at Lucky Bar (notably at the Pride Festival), their appearance as our cover girls this week seemed a natural time to taste a little Cheesecake. We asked "Princess of the Universe" Champagne Sparkles to dish the dirt on her job as a half-time burlesque queen.
Monday Magazine: What are the Cheesecakes all about?
Champagne Sparkles: In a physical sense we're doing burlesque and pin-up, but as a movement we're trying to incorporate and empower a broad range of women—age, size, shape, background, orientation. Every time we do a show, we always have people come up to us and say how wonderful it is to see "real" women up on the stage. We all have day jobs—moms, librarians, government workers, environmental scientists—so people can easily relate to us, put themselves in our shoes.
MM: Are you surprised by the success you've had?
CS: It's totally taken us by surprise how it's all taken off. We're just a bunch of super-excited girls with a lot of energy who just put it out there. We've been working really hard at it, but it hasn't been a lot of effort; the opportunities just keep coming.
MM: What makes the Cheesecakes unique?
CS: As a large troupe, we have the opportunity to perform more often without getting exhausted, and there's a variety of us to see. We also have enough people to put on a two-hour show on our own—which also helps set us apart, because we can easily do group numbers and expand on simple themes. And you can tell we aren't professional dancers—we can't do the splits or any really fancy dance moves— but people seem to really like the fact we can tell a story on stage and that each person has cultivated their own character. I think it adds a theatrical element to it that really helps people connect to us.
MM: Who does your costumes?
CS: We do a lot of them ourselves, but we recently got a costume sponsor: Veronica Hull of VH Studio Designs in Sidney. She's an expert in corsetry and specializes in PVC, but she can make anything.
MM: How do you feel about being naked on the cover of Monday, and what do you say to people who won't like the idea of naked women on our cover?
CS: Ha—the cat is definitely out of the bag now! I'm actually really excited about it, and the shoot was a lot of fun to do. But people just need to relax, to see this as the fun thing it is. We're all really proud of ourselves and since we are a group of real women, everybody should be able to see themselves reflected in those girls on the cover. We're committed to having a good time with this, and as long as it stays fun, we'll be up there shaking our ta-tas.
