Who Gives Kudos:

April 22, 2008 - Tuesday

So I need a favor.  A big one.  A reader recently contacted me to ask how she could get Hijas carried in her public library.  I grew up on the public library.  My dad took me to the library every single Saturday morning and let me stay however long I wanted-- gathering up the 17 or 12 or 22 books I wanted to check out that week.  He never asked me to hurry.  He never told me I had too many books.  The library was my great indulgence.  When I think about Hijas not having found its way to some libraries around the country, I am sad that the stories that so many dynamic women shared may not make their way to some who would really enjoy learning from them.  So, I am asking your help in getting Hijas out to more libraries.  Here's what you can do.  Find your local public library system here.  Look to see if they are carrying Hijas Americanas by Rosie Molinary in their catalog.  If not, please request that they carry it (that's often an option right by the catalog pages online).  If you want to go another route, you can pick up Hijas Americanas yourself at your local bookseller or on Amazon and donate it to your library system.  I am happy to send you a signed book plate dedicating the book in your honor to your library system. If you decide to do either of these things, let me know (with a note about what the name of your library system is and where it is located)!  I'll keep a library list to see the ripple effect we can have.  Thanks for believing in the book and helping to make it more available to readers!

Thank you for checking, Mmmmm-vette. Of course, Austin being as cool as it is, it would have the book, ya know? ha!

Love this idea...and will check it out for the area that I am in...in So Cal...

que te vaya bien...together, we can make a difference...

It is such a catch 22...libraries don't carry Latino books because they do not circulate...latinos don't go to libraries because they can't find anything of interest there...

Isn't that funny? Will you do a request on their web-site- it's right near where you search the catalog for the book. I figure I'll look like a tool if I make the request for my own book! Thanks, girl!

Thanks, Benita! And I just booked a reading and signing in the Bronx-- maybe you can come and I can sign your book. It's May 28th at 7 pm at the Barnes and Noble in Bay Plaza Mall. Any chance you can make it? Feel free to bring girlfriends, sisters, anyone else, too!

Looks like the previous respondent has Austin, TX covered. Good deal. I have recommended the book to two co-workers at the domestic violence and sexual assault agency I work for and I have have positive reviews through both these individuals. The word is spreading! I love how empowering this novel is for the Latina population. We will definately attempt to spread that empowerment with our children that my co-workers and I work with...
