Christmas morning was now upon us
And outside was white with snow,
Santa Claus had long been gone
At least who she was, we know.
Everything seemed so joyful and still
As I watched the Christmas lights flash,
holding on tightly to my silver gun
Wearing a plastic cowboy moustache.
My brother had the smallest gun
And was jealous so we started to fight,
The big one's mine I said to him
Mummy put it on my bed last night.
Well the chocolates kept him quiet
As he filled up his tipper truck,
With bounty's, mars bars and toffees
And the driver who was a rubber duck.
Breakfast was always ackees and saltfish
Fried dumplins and nice things to eat,
Then later for the main Christmas dinner
We'd have turkey and roasted meat.
The Christmas days that I remember
was always peaceful without a doubt,
And even with sibling skirmishes
The day was joyous throughout.
Televisions those days were black and white
And we'd watch the choirs sing,
The peace and spirit of the carols
Made angels fold their wings.
After all, it was a time to celebrate
The Christ and his holy birth,
Who God the father gave to us
To be king of all the earth.
My uncle and Aunt always came downstairs
To join us on Christmas day,
And before we started to eat anything
A prayer my mother would say,
Sometimes when she said the grace
It was kind of boring and long,
And even when she finished praying
She wanted to sing a song.
"Finish now" I'd say in my mind
Lets get our teeth in this food,
Breakfast happened many hours ago
So now I'm in the mood.
