yeah,
that chopping channel performance includes many segments from our album, "GITAR".
we originally sent it off to Seeland as a demo cd.
interesting that parts of our album were used in at least 5 of the tracks...
especially in track 15 "spirit animals".
maybe you didn't know, considering our demo (according to mark hossler) ended up sitting on don's desk.
anyways,
considering that all of you have been inspirations for quite some time, it would be nice to get credit for
our cuts.
not to mention that most of them weren't altered whatsoever and instead used as segments during your performance.
examples?
here.

the "um" part at the end of 15

as well as:
"no gitars"
used under don talking.

oh yeah:
"hey"

too many examples...
parts of these tracks are all used in the track, "spirit animals".
there are many more...

anyways, we can say that we've never used negativland nor wobbly collages in any of our albums.
if we did, it would be called a "remix" and we'd credit you for it.
we are supposed to be in the same boat.
we aren't the record industry.
we aren't pop culture.
we definitely deserve credit.

hello GITAR -- thanks very much for your post -- I will update my web page immediately to reflect what was borrowed with a link to your page. I myself was unaware of what Don was mixing and have mixed feelings about his use of unreleased demos for his chopped materials, especially given the ludicrous amount of time I spend chopping my own cut-ups for each episode.

The nature of Over The Edge never leaves room for back-announcing or playlists. Two decades later, I'm only now discovering the names of songs I've listened to dozens of times on old cassettes I made of the show as a teenager. When Don's mixing Richard Pinhas' 'Iceland' or Graeme Revell's 'Insect Musicians' or an entire Steve Roach piece that one can eventually happen across, it's one thing, but when they're sampling unreleased demos similar in style to his own work, it's a different matter and accreditation is essential. A friend of mine once sampled several songs from a 1994 cassette album of mine without crediting me and went on to sell a few thousand -- it wasn't a comfortable feeling, so I apologize for our group stepping on your work.

I should admit to the unfortunate fact that my increased use of mp3's as sample material, as well as the sheer volume of the world music I was sampling means that not even I could provide a full list of the several thousand samples used in our show.

Thanks for writing in and I'll have the download page updated later tonight.

Best, jl

I really appreciate your writing this, and Crediting GITAR on your download page.
Also.
I completely understand what you, Don and Mark are saying about improvisation with samples... and have listened to OTE - loving that the source of each noise was usually masked by the sheer volume of sounds being played and all the changes...
personally, i never cared about getting credited, though i also tend to never sample any music/snd that i already like before i start chopping -
really, i was just excited and weirded_out to hear our edits in the live album, makes me wish i heard the whole show . . .
plus, it gave me another excuse to write Seeland, again, and say "yo, yo, yo, yo, what do you think of the demo we sent?"

alright. enoughtype.

thanks again

one more comment about the nature of Over The Edge -- since I only guest on his show about twice a year, I can afford to dedicate massive amounts of time to pre-production for those events. Don assembles & mixes 40+ three hour long episodes annually -- the amount of work he devotes to every week's show is beyond belief. In the context of a long broadcast, Don's use of someone else's collage CD is more perceptible and basically feels like less of a bite than it does than when I take that broadcast, cut & layer it with other cut-ups we've made ourselves, and post the 55 minutes worth of mp3's as a formalized album (if a free one)

lastly, your work made it into all those sections of my final edit because it sounded great, so I hope more people hear your stuff
