On one of my recent trips back home, I attended the ceremonies marking the ninetieth anniversary of the Halifax Explosion. I went partly in honour of my parents. My father's ninetieth birthday falls in the same month and my mother's birthday is the day before his. My family, steeped in the world of creative drama, has been linked by my mother's gift for mythmaking to great historic and military events. Witness our birthdays. I have a sister who was born on the day the bomb was dropped on Heroshima. I was born on the same calendar day that the Chesapeake sailed into Boston Harbour. Apparently my name, Edith, means "prosperous in war". Lest we forget.

Edie's mother.

My mother was a war bride, arriving in Canada on the Queen Mary in Halifax on (date) at pier …her connection to Halifax is a visceral one, and she learned about and taught us the history, taking us to all the museums and historic sites on a regular basis.

She was also writer, and when at home with five small children in a fishing Cove outside Halifax ,wrote stories about her experiences in a conversational form much like my own, and read them regularly on CBC radio in the sixties. I often think if the internet had been in existence, my mother would have been a prolific blogger!!

One of my mother's last film appearances was a cameo role in the CBC documentary "Shattered City" Janet F. Kitz the author of the book and screenplay was at the ceremonies. I am from extremely dramatic, stock and have adopted my mother's way of attaching symbolic meaning to everything that happens around. I like to weave everything together in my storytelling and creative endeavors….and love to share it in whatever way I can .

Often it translates into a show at the store…..the Titanic event we produced on April 11th is a perfect example of this.
