Industry Rant (a.k.a. Foot in the Mouth or Foot in the Door?)

{start rant}It seems that the majority of novel fiction readers read the genre as a means of escape from a very imperfect, unjust world. Some do it for the action throughout a piece of fiction and most do it to get a good feeling that stays with them long after they've finished the story. Thus arises the expectation of a ho-hum, cheery little “happy ending”. I did not write 'Bleeder' with this in mind. I mean, it's my story - my intellectual property - but the people (and the publishers) want what they want. Sure, I could stick to my convictions and not sell out, but there is no "sell" without "sell out". This is not the way it should be by any stretch, of course. I don't consider myself formulaic in my writing. I don't subscribe to any one "style" of writing. I just fucking write, and whatever story develops as I'm writing becomes the whole of the story word by seeping, creeping word. But that's not good enough for the fucked up candy-coated publishing industry. No, one must fit the mold even though that mold has indeed become like mold itself; a growth from rot and decay that continues to grow, unchecked and poisonous with so few consumers giving a flying fuck. I've come to the conclusion that I can either shit with a by-the-numbers candy coating or get off the porcelain throne of perpetual stagnation. So, I am re-writing core elements of 'Bleeder'. I am tearing off its limbs that make it my own Frankensteinian creation; rearranging its vital organs so that it still breaths and functions, though not in the way it was lovingly intended; stabbing at its very heart repeatedly, until that expected candied syrup coats its pages and then collects to fill the mold created by the industry and sadly accepted by so many consumers. No, 'Bleeder' will not be what it was meant to be, but so few things are anymore. I do know, at least, that I was meant to write tales of what I hope are at least largely intriguing and disturbing fiction. I will play the game in order to gain a foothold on the industry, but next will come the claws. When those claws come out to play, baby, the stories will be mine to write as I see fit. Like it or lump it.{end rant}

The industry is getting tighter and tighter, as it appears that less people are willing to spend money on books - and every publisher wants the next Harry Potter or Twilight, regardless of whether the actual writing is of quality. The project I am working on now will most likely not fit with my publisher (every business has an "image," and that's just the way it is) but I am writing it anyway. I *have* to. If I did not have this compulsion to write, I would certainly be doing something easier that paid more!
But think of this.. if Candy Bleeder is published, one day will come when you can put out "BLEEDER - THE ORIGINAL NIGHTMARE!"

You make a very good point, my friend. Keep up the fight! Maybe, just maybe, there actually will be a wake up call.

Perhaps, my friend. Evil does come in many guises, after all. ;-)

Hey Dave. Think of it this way...Stephen King is able to republish older novels of his in the more lengthy versions in which they were intended when he first wrote them. And no one says a word. When you make it BIG, just re-release Bleeder the way YOU intended. Your fans will thank you, and the publishers will too, with all the bucks you'll rake in for it.

Chin up, my friend. All writers must make sacrifices, unfortunately. This is indeed a narrow minded industry that really needs to take a deep breathe of reality. Cookie cutouts are BORING, and THAT'S why TRUE authors write with their hearts, and not with the blind wallets of the suits in this business...

One day, you'll make them eat their words....no pun intended....LOL
