Current mood:  aroused
Here are a few reviews of our most recent release, THE MIKE WATT E.P. out now on Sounds Are Active records.

From LA RECORD:

If you're a fan of the Minutemen or fIREHOSE, you're already well aware that Mike Watt is a god. Well, chumps, Widow Babies done raise the ante and declared Mike Watt god in a monotheistic, "Yeah, THAT God!" sort of way. Early on in this concept (really?) album, Mike creates the world, hangs out in San Pedro (this part's true) and then battles Abraham Lincoln. Oh, but this Lincoln is nosferatu. That's right: Mike Watt battles Vampire Lincoln. I won't spoil the ending here, but someone does get their hands stolen. Not surprisingly, the non-lyrical side of this EP is whimsical and sharp. The rhythm section of the Widow Babies rolls through the songs easily with fierce galloping drum beats built for hip-jigglin' and heavy bass lines obviously inspired by Watt (but not TOO much like him- that'd be pandering). The guitar work is light- on the surf side with all the jangle that Minutemen fans would expect but less vamping. The vocals are performed by what sounds like a young girl singing in her car, with a jubilant bounce and a cadence that seems almost straight from around the campire. All in all, a delightful little sound-story with a good message: "Mike Watt will never stop jamming econo." Watt be praised.- Matt Dupree

From ALL MUSIC GUIDE:

Naming a release after one of the most beloved, and deservedly legendary, bassists that America's produced is always a good sign. Of course, good intentions are only part of the story for any release, so the treat of the Widow Babies work on The Mike Watt EP is how much of a tribute it is as much as its own thing—if the song lengths are pure Minutemen, the performances, especially thanks to frontwoman Elise's energetic sing/screaming, are a burst of pure riot grrl attitude and celebration. Clocking in at six songs under 15 minutes, the release isn't merely a celebration of Watt but a concept album about his battle against a vampire shaped like Abraham Lincoln—thus such great song titles as "Mike Watt Created the Universe with a Bass Solo" and "In Which Watt Wins Back His Hands and Basses a River into Existence." It's a sly tribute to Watt's own health problems that he had to fight and overcome, and above all a fun one, frazzled but focused rock with, of course, prominent bass work. As it should be. 3 1/2 stars out of 5- Ned Raggett
