After so much planning and preparation, the first presentation of Latinas 4 Life took place at Murry Bergtraum H.S. (the school I graduated from and love so much)! It was a magical experience. We decided to make it especially for the young women, so it was an audience full of teenage mujeres. They were curious, possibly skeptical at first, but as the program evolved, a change was so apparent in the energy. It was electric. I shared my poems, some very personal issues, and opened up the mic for them to share too. It was spiritual. We spoke of our community, our sisterhood, the issues that plague us and solutions to our struggles. We spoke about the beauty of virginity, importance of carrying your own condoms if you are sexually active and how it is never too late to be powerful. We broke the cultural barriers and walked out of there as sisters of one family. It is hard to even put into words what the experience was like, you had to really be there to understand how deep it went. I got emotional at times that I didn't even expect I would, I watched my teachers watching the transformation happening and it was touching how proud and happy they looked. It was a pure blessing and I am so grateful to everyone that contributed their time, love and energy to make it happen. Latinas 4 Life is making a difference!
