The "Invisible Man" album is based on the novel by Ralph Ellison, “The Invisible Man”, which tells
the story of a young black man who moves from the deep South to Harlem, N.Y. to
discover that in everyone's eyes he is something different but no one is actually able to
see “him”. Ellison never gives the reader the protagonist’s name adding to the
mystery and “invisibility” of the character. The book for me reflects much of
my experience as a black man in the United States. The Black male image
represents many things for many people but few ever get the opportunity to
truly understand Black men nor our experience.
Secondly,
“invisible man” is representative of the unseen god force that constitutes who
“i” actually am. “We” as earthlings, and all things in the universe comprise a
totality of energy i consider to be “God”. I speak/emcee from that
understanding.
Lastly,
the third dimension of this album is the concept that as a representative of
authentic Hiphop culture, myself and other artists are “invisible” to the
mainstream. This "invisibility" has been beneficial for me in retaining my creative freedom from media influence and market demands. I enjoy creating cds and then giving the majority away to family, friends and people i meet along the way in my journey! There is much to gain from silence.
peace.
