When I was 6 my mom took me to a production of Annie and of course after that I wanted to be the first black Annie (yes Annie) and my grandmother proceeded to list that all the other things I couldn't be because I was a little brown girl and that me being Annie was as likely as there being a black president...Highly unlikely...Right?

Wrong!!!
I'll admit when I first heard Barack was running, I was a bit skeptical that he could win. But over time I became connected and energized over the change he was offering...
Last night the all things are possible button was pushed, and the lens with which people of color will see themselves has forever been changed.A man the product of the union of an African man and white women. And a obviously brown women who grew up in the Chicago project Cabreni Green, are about to take up residence in the White house and on the world stage. And if you had said that were possible three years ago even, most people would have told you that you needed padded cell. I might have even said that.
But we live in America where many things are possible...The night of the elections I called my mother, and she was in tears because in her time she has witness the hopes and the dreams of my great grandmother who attended march on Washington come to fruition. My grandmother who is no longer able to walk demanded that my mother put her in a Van and drive her to get an absentee ballot, is now living in an America she did not always believe was possible. And even she's siting up a little higher in her hospital bed.
I am encouraged by this election and by Barack's courage to do something no one thought could be, in ways that I cannot even translate into words.

But I want to ask one thing of you my fans...
That now that we've got the man we want in office, that we not set our expectations high of Barrack.
What do I mean when I say that you ask?
Here it is...
We are all, each and everyone of us responsible for the America we seek to live in.
And in some ways a bit of the trouble we're in we helped create as well.
The mortgage crisis, and overspending, voter apathy, lack of parental responsibility, chasing the bling so hard we couldn't save for retirement,
or create savings for our kids college or pay off our student loans...
This may not be every ones story, however the burden now belongs to us all.
So long story short, what happens now falls on our shoulders as much as it does Barack's.
We must do our part because it took years for us to get into this mess, and it WILL take years to get us out.
So on the days when Barack makes choices you don't completely agree with,
or falls short on some promises because circumstances change.
I implore, and encourage you to see the big picture.

"This change may take years and maybe not even just one term to take place"
Yes Barack we know...

And for that reason we must all do what we can on our own.
And if you are reading this and you are a person of color I demand that you make good use of the door that has slammed open in front of you by striving to be excellent.
People bled and died for this moment to be possible.
Don't let the pride and excellence inspired by this time fade with the headlines,
make the ancestors proud.
Use your jobs, families, music and lives to inspire and to serve.
To all my brothers and sisters
black, white, latino, asian, ect.
Let's raise our children to know how important hard work is, show a great example by doing our best, saving more spending less,
mentoring, and adopting children right here in the united states who are not our own, living below not above our means,
and staying politically active in our cities and our states because it is our right and our responsibility...
Yes today is a new day and it starts with us!

YES WE DID!!!!! AND YES WE CAN!!!!
